What is a Male Orgasm?

The Basics
Most of us know a thing or two about male orgasm. At least the basics. A lot of us may also make the common mistake of underestimating its complexity.
The male orgasm is actually a complex physiological process that involves several stages:
Arousal | This is the first stage, where sexual desire is triggered. This is where something has triggered arousal within the body. Anything from physical touch, erotic images, or even specific thoughts. During this stage a lot of physical changes occur. Like an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Blood will also rush to the penis to create an erection. |
Plateau | This is the phase during stimulation just before orgasm. The physical changes that began in the arousal phase intensify. The testes are pulled up into the scrotum, and the man’s body is fully prepared for orgasm. This stage can last from a few minutes to much longer, if you want it to. |
Orgasm | This is the climax of the sexual response cycle. It’s the shortest phase, usually lasting only a few seconds. During orgasm, there are rhythmic contractions of the pelvic muscles, including those around the anus and the muscles of the penis. These contractions cause ejaculation as they help to propel semen from the testicles, through the prostate, and out of the urethra. The feelings of pleasure and release are most intense during this phase. |
Resolution | This is the final phase, where the body returns to its normal resting state. The penis becomes flaccid again, and there’s a general sense of relaxation and well-being. Men also enter a refractory period during this phase, where they are unable to achieve another erection or orgasm for a period of time, which can vary from a few minutes to much longer depending on the individual. |

Male vs Female Orgasms
While both male and female orgasms involve similar physiological processes, there are some key differences. I mean besides the huge orgasm gap, of course! By the way, if you still don’t believe in that, I’ve got some cold, hard orgasm statistics for you – take a look!
Anyway, for one, men typically reach orgasm more quickly than women. Men also tend to have a refractory period after orgasm, during which they are unable to achieve another orgasm, while many women are capable of having multiple orgasms in a short period of time. Pros and cons, I guess, right?
However, the average duration of a male orgasm is about 25.8 seconds which is similar to the average duration of female orgasms. So while the journey to orgasm may be different for penis-owners and vulva-owners, one could say the destination is remarkably similar!
What Does a Male Orgasm Feel Like?
Describing what an orgasm feels like, can be a bit like trying to describe a sunset to someone who’s never seen one—it’s a deeply personal and subjective experience that can vary widely from person to person. However, most penis-owners describe orgasm as a feeling of intense, pleasurable release, often accompanied by a sense of euphoria and relaxation.
Sadly, I have to admit that I don’t personally know what it’s like to have a penis. So, I don’t know what it feels like to orgasm with one. It’s actually quite annoying! I’m so curious to experience what life would be like walking around with a dong of my own!
Alas, I had to ask for back-up to write about this topic. Aside from extensive research on the general topic of interest, I’ve also asked for some first-hand descriptions from people I know. These descriptions helped me put together this blog post and this particular section.
Here’s an example from my penis-owning partner, describing what an orgasm feels like to him:
Tingling and intense, like losing control for a little bit in the best possible way. A tensing and un-tensing. A washing feeling of relief after extended anticipation and stimulation, like all that stimulation is merging into one big moment.
I found that some of the same sensations were described repetitively. Often the sensation begins in the genital area, then radiates outwards, sometimes resulting in a full-body experience. Some penis-owners also report feeling a tingling sensation or “chills” during orgasm. And of course, there’s the purely physical aspect—those rhythmic muscle contractions that are the hallmark of orgasm.
How Long Do Male Orgasms Last?
As mentioned earlier, the average duration of a male orgasm is about 25.8 seconds, ranging from 6.4 to 56.1 seconds. However, this can vary widely from person to person, and even from orgasm to orgasm. Some men may have shorter orgasms, while others may experience longer, more drawn-out orgasms. This is especially accurate for energetic orgasms that just tend to free-style those 4 stages of orgasm!
It’s also worth noting that the orgasm itself is just one part of the sexual response cycle. The entire process, from arousal to resolution, can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the individual and the situation.
It all depends largely on the sexual stimuli, the level of arousal you’re experiencing, and the physical stimulation you’re receiving. It also depends on the speed, the intensity, your general level of comfort, etc. There really isn’t a limit to this, because a lot of it depends of your unique situation and your intention with your orgasm.
The Different Types of Male Orgasms
There are actually a few different types of male orgasms. If you weren’t familiar with these, I’m glad you’re here reading this now. The more ways you know about to unlock more pleasure for yourself, the better! Let’s take a look at some of the most common ones.
Ejaculatory Orgasms

These are the most common type of male orgasms. They’re the ones we associate with male climax and ejaculation. They are often the result of intense stimulation and high arousal. We all know and love the ejaculatory orgasm. It’s the one we’re all told is the “climax” of masturbation or penetrative sex.
As mentioned earlier, the orgasms itself invokes rhythmic contractions in the pelvic muscles, the muscles around the anus and the penis. The contractions are what make ejaculation possible! Oh, and, of course, this whole process is accompanied by intense pleasure and a sense of release. The sensation often begins in the genital area and can radiate outwards, creating a full-body experience.
Prostate Orgasms

The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland located in the male reproductive system, just below the bladder. It plays a crucial role in the production of semen, providing the fluid that helps nourish and transport sperm from the testicles. You can massage the prostate through anal play.
As for why it’s an erogenous zone, the prostate is super rich in nerve endings and can feel amazing when stimulated. It’s often referred to as the “male G-spot” or the p-spot. Stimulating the prostate can lead to intense, full-body orgasms, often described as being different from your regular penile orgasms. There are a lot sex toys out there to assist you in your p-spot adventures. Check out Rachel’s blog post on “How to Use a Prostate Massage for Prostate Milking”.
Multiple Orgasms

While it’s less common, some men are capable of experiencing multiple orgasms. This involves having several orgasms in a short period of time, often without losing an erection. Unlike the typical male orgasm that ends with ejaculation and triggers a refractory period, multiple orgasms in often involve non-ejaculatory orgasms.
This requires a degree of control over one’s arousal and orgasmic response. Techniques often involve strengthening pelvic muscles with by practicing edging, which involves bringing oneself close to orgasm then backing off to decrease arousal, and then building up arousal again. This cycle can be repeated multiple times, potentially leading to multiple “dry orgasms” while the grand finale can be a super intense ejaculatory orgasm.

Energetic Orgasms

Full body orgasms, as they’re also called, are a lesser known type of male orgasm. An energetic orgasm is a type of orgasm that involves the entire body, not just the genital area. It’s like a wave of pleasure that spreads across the whole body, creating a feeling of intense continuous bliss.
This type of orgasm is often associated with spiritual practices like Tantra or mindful sexuality, where the focus is on channeling and controlling sexual energy. It’s not just about the physical sensation, but also about the emotional and spiritual experience. The key to achieving an energetic orgasm is understanding and directing one’s own sexual energy.
