I am not your traditional lover of silicone lubes, but when it came to choosing the best anal lube, I just had to pick this one! The Pjur silicone anal lube is one of the smoothest and most comfortable anal lubes I have ever tried – feeling natural and not too heavy. It is not the thickest lube in this round-up, but it certainly coats the skin or a sex toy. Pjur have made a range of ‘back door’ anal lube products, with the recognisable butt image and graphic lettering on the front. Despite all being from the same category of anal lubes, they all have slightly different qualities. Some are thicker and more coating, while others are thinner but smoother. Pjur make very recognisable lubes, and even if you were to remove the Pjur logo, I would be able to tell what brand the bottle was from! Try and avoid putting lube on your hands as much as possible, as it can be difficult to unscrew the lid when your hands are slippery! Otherwise, the the bottle is easy to squeeze and the hole makes it easy to accurately pour the lube onto the skin. The only downside to this lube, is that it contains silicone, which is not compatible with silicone sex toys. If you are someone who likes a silicone toy, like a silicone butt plug, then I would recommend avoiding this lube. The same if you are planning on using a condom that is not made of latex or polyurethane. But the reason I chose this anal lube to be my Test Winning product, is because it embodies everything I love about an anal lube – it is not to thick, so doesn’t feel too synthetic and false. I appreciate a natural feeling lube – I also like the ingredients that make up this lube, as Glycerin is one of the main ingredients I tend to avoid. It still provides a good amount of cushioning and comfort too, which is the main quality that an anal lube should have!

You’ve just seen my review of the Pjur Back Door silicone lube, so I had to include the water-based version, for those of you who like to use different sex toys with your lube. A perfect lube for those of you who like a thin anal lube. Working in this industry, you start to realise what products and sex related accessories are a fan favourite, and what is more niche and specific. I have noticed that anal sex seems to have a bigger taboo umbrella over it, so if you’re a beginner in anal sex activities, I would highly recommend this lube to you. When first exploring anal sex, it can be pretty daunting, so by using the right lube, it can make the whole experience more pleasurable and comfortable. I also think that it is important that for a beginner’s first lube, it is not overwhelming thick! Yes, sometimes a thicker lube can feel more cushioning, which would be better for a beginner, but I would often argue that thick isnt always the best. With this lube also being a water-based lube, it can be used with any sex toy material – silicone butt plugs for example, can often be more flexible and comfortable, and more likely to be used by a beginner, rather than a metal or glass butt plug. I would always suggest a silicone toy for a beginner, therefore they would need a water-based lube. A shame that once again, Pjur haven’t avoided Glycerin – an ingredient I tend to actively avoid. When it comes to anal lubes, it is not that big of a deal as it would be if it was an every day lube, but it is still something that might annoy vulva owners. Otherwise, a great beginner’s lube by a recognisable and reliable lube brand. Well done Pjur!

The 50 Shades of Grey franchising has taken the world by storm, starting with the books and movies, and now the obvious next choice, actual sex toys! I knew straight away what the lube was referencing, with the recognisable tie image and font. All while I think the franchise has done well to carry on the theme, it makes the lube very obvious as to what it is! I am more of a subtle person myself, and have always preferred lubes that don’t look like bottles of lube! I know I am being picky, but I am who I am. When it comes to the product itself, I am much happier. It is much thicker than the Pjur lubes, and acts like a more typical anal lube. I like the way it is thicker and more cushioning, as it makes anal sex more comfortable, and therefore enjoyable. The most attractive features to this lube are that it is affordable and thick enough to still feel natural. The price tag is low enough that you are not spending an arm on a leg and investing in an anal lube; on something that you don’t even know if you like yet! But the packaging reflects the low price tag – it doesn’t feel the most luxurious in your hand. yes, it works nicely, with the click-close lid, but I am not one who tends to be easily impressed. I wish I was, but I am the biggest critic when it comes to packaging. I think it is such an easy thing to get right, yet I haven’t found a company that has made a bottle I am completely in love with!

4 Thickest

Condom safeYes
IngredientsAqua, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Polyacrylate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, EDTA, Polysorbate 80, Sorbitan Cocoate, Perfume (Fragrance)

If you have read my review, you will know that this is the thickest lube… I have ever seen! Almost coming out of the tube like a paste, the Tenga hole lotion is less of a lotion, more of a gel! It is definitely going to coat the skin, providing almost another layer! I would recommend using this lube for more rigorous, rough sex, that would be better with more cushioning. Despite being a water-based product, due to the fact it is so thick, it manages to hold its’ moisture and wetness well, for longer than the average water-based lube. This lube would work well with larger anal toys, or longer sessions, as you will be needing a lube that lasts as long as you! The bottle is initially something that put me off this lube, as I thought it was too big! I also didn’t like the applicator that much, as it is something I had never seen before. I am someone who likes to put the lube on my hands first and then apply to the skin, rather than straight from the bottle, but if you are someone who likes the lube to be aimed accurately, as well as internally, then I think this bottle would be great. If it were me and I needed a thick, long lasting lube like this, I would prefer the bottle to be less obvious, but that’s personal preference.

Product recommendations to use with lube

Lube can be used on its own, or applied to the skin using yoru hands. But when it comes to anal sex, there are other products that can make it much easier to apply. Take a read of my suggestions…

Cleanstream Smooth Silicone Lube Launcher

Cleanstream Smooth Silicone Lube Launcher - Product recommendations to use with lube
A step up from ABS plastic, to a silicone lube applicator, the Cleanstream Silicone Lube Launcher is a great way of applying lube to the anus, or inside. Make sure to only be using a water-based anal lube, as silicone lubes could damage the silicone around the launcher. By using a lube applicator, you can apply lube inside the anus, which will help with comfort and wetness.

Important information you should know about anal lube

Lube is typically as straight forward as it sounds, but there are some things you might not know. Take a read of my suggestions before diving into the deep end…

Anal lubes containing glycerin

Glycerin is a sugar that can often promote bacterial growth, in the vagina. This can then lead to a bacterial infection, such as thrush. When it comes to anal lube, this isn’t as big of a problem, as it perhaps would be for a normal, day to day lube. It is up to you, but an anal lube with glycerin shouldn’t put you off, especially of the consistency and viscosity is what you are looking for.

Silicone vs Water-based?

Silicone or water-based lubes? The age old debate – both have great qualities that can make a lube a great accessory to sex. Silicone lubes tend to last longer and usually are mors slippery, whereas water-based lubes work better with silicone sex toys. I would take into consideration the material of the sex toy or condom that you plan on using, as well as how long you want the lube to last, or what type of texture – both water-based and silicone lubes can be thick or thin, so take a read of the reviews to narrow down your options.

How to Use Anal Lubes

Anal lubes can be spread around the desired area using your hands or a toy, as well as inserted into the anus using a lube injector. They are there to reduce friction and increase wetness, so use as much or as little as you want.

How to Clean Anal Lubes off the skin

Anal lubes, whether they are silicone or water-based, can be cleaned off the skin using hot water and natural soap. Some silicone lubes may be more difficult to get off the skin.

FAQ

What is an anal lube?

An anal lube is a sexual lubricant that can be used during sex with a partner or sex toy, to decrease friction and make sex more comfortable. Especially for anal sex, the anus is an area of the body that doesn't self-lubricate, so I would highly recommend using lube for anal sex.
