  • Are looking for a fun, whimsical couple's game
  • Like the idea of handing over control to your partner
  • Don't take yourselves too seriously!

  • Aren't in a heterosexual relationship
  • Would prefer a longer, more involved board game
  • Cringe easily

Foreplay in a Row is, as you might expect, a play on the classic game of 'Connect Four' or 'Four in a Row' with a sexy twist! Each counter you play has an action written on it, ranging from more tame, flirty commands to full-on sex. There are pink counters for 'her' and white counters for 'him', and the commands are gendered depending on the color. You take turns playing a counter with an action you want your partner to perform. Of course, the aim of the game is to get four counters in a row, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Foreplay in a Row -

As soon as I saw Foreplay in a Row on a sex toy website, I knew I had to have it. The idea of sexy games is really appealing to me, but most of the ones I’ve tried so far are more in the ‘question cards’ or ‘conversation starters’ genre, so I was eager to try out something that was a bit more of a traditional game. Plus, who doesn’t love Four in a Row?

Playing a Round

This game is so simple to play, and if you’ve ever played Connect 4, then you’re good to go. You simply take turns dropping a counter into the vertical board, trying to make a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line of four counters in your color. Each counter has a prompt or action on it, which range from tame flirting to sexual acts. In the beginning, I thought that the white counters were for me and the pink ones were for my partner. This may sound a bit strange, but I saw that all the white counters said things for ‘the woman’ to do, so I presumed that I was suggesting to do these things to my partner. As you might guess, I was wrong about that — you’re actually commanding your partner to do these things to you. Personally, I think I prefer my way of thinking, but there is also something wonderful about having your partner tell you what they want you to do. In the end, we decided that we didn’t want to everything on every counter we’d played, as some of them felt very awkward to us. However, I can’t deny that it put us in a spicy mood, and I got some good ideas about what he might like.

A Problematic Fave

This game is practically the definition of heteronormativity! It’s designed to be played by a man and a woman together, with half of the counters for ‘her’ and the other half for ‘him’. Some of the prompts on the counters are the same, but many of them are gender-specific and use gendered language, making it pretty useless if you’re not in a straight relationship. Plus, both the “My choice” and “Your choice” counters are only for ‘her’ to play! It may also go without saying, but it’s not very playable for those in a throuple, polycule etc. I’m a cis woman in a monogamous relationship with a cis man, so I could go along with it, but I’m also bisexual and get really annoyed at how many sexy games aren’t inclusive. The other issue at play here is the sub-par quality of some of the actions. Many are totally innocuous, like “Talk dirty” and “Nibble ear”, but others are just a bit strange. My partner had a good laugh at some of them, including “Shave and trim her” and “Booby sex”. No shade to either action, but they made us giggle.

This game has a very familiar and basic design, which is fine for what it is. It comes in the box as two pieces that you press together to form the 'board' and a bag full of counters. I do wish that they had included a little bag for the counters, as they can easily get lost or fall out of the box if you don't keep them in something. I also have a very minor complaint about the board, which is that it isn't open at the bottom like regular Four in a Row games, so you have to turn it upside down to get the counters out.

If you know how to play Four in a Row, you know how to play Foreplay in a Row. It's incredibly simple, so you don't have to waste time reading a rulebook. You can also choose exactly how you go about performing the actions — you can decide to do all of them, or just pick your favorites. Some of them are more involved than others, so if you want to make it easier and more approachable, I would just choose the ones you like best.

The plastic is lightweight and a little flimsy, but I don't expect many people will be manhandling it in a way that could cause damage. The other aspect of quality to address is that of the actions, or commands. As I mentioned above, some feel a bit dated, heteronormative, or just out of left field. There are definitely some sexy games that feel like a lot of thought and care has been put into the prompts, but this isn't one of them.

I have to be honest with you — as I was writing this review, I originally used the phrase 'cheap and cheerful' to describe this game. Then, I checked the price and realized that it is not particularly cheap! At around $27, I would have expected better quality construction and more thought put into the prompts. That being said, it also won't break the bank, so if you think you'd be interested a silly, fun game like this one, I would still recommend it.

Foreplay in a Row -

How much you enjoy Foreplay in a Row will depend heavily on how much you enjoy games that give you specific sexual prompts vs sexy games that just get you talking. There are no suggestive questions that feature in many other games, it's just a game of action prompts. You can definitely steer the game so that you stay within the realm of things you find sexy and leave out stuff you find awkward. I did enjoy it a lot once I embraced the sheer silliness of it!

The box that this game comes in is... cheesy. There's an illustration of a white, straight couple on the front in their underwear, playing the game (which looks much bigger than it is in real life!). I'm not a fan — it just looks cheap. If I could, I would get rid of it, but then I'd have nothing to store the game in.

Foreplay in a Row -

Foreplay in a Row comes with 21 pink counters for 'her' and 21 white counters for 'him'. Some of the prompts are the same for both, but many of them are different. The board itself is made from plastic and comes in two parts that snap together.

Foreplay in a Row -

  • Silly and fun
  • Very easy and quick to play
  • Gets you in a flirty mood

  • Extremely heteronormative
  • Some prompts are better than others
  • Fairly expensive for what it is

This game was a real laugh. I can't say confidently that it's a great game, or a really sexy game, but we did have a lot of fun with it. It has its issues, including being extremely heteronormative, but for a silly, flirty game to play now and again, it's not half bad. You just have to embrace the cringe.
