The Lifelike Lover is a vibrating dildo that aims for realism while staying affordable. Its special twist is it doesn't just vibrate, its outer silicone skin slides to allow its internal mechanics to extend and retract, creating a thrusting motion. Think a miniature sex machine - one that you can hold in your hand, use as a strap-on, or use its extra strong suction cup to enjoy completely hands free!. A motor halfway down the shaft spins for extra stimulation, and gives the thrusts a small amount of rotation. With 7" (18 cm) of insertable length and a 1.6" (4cm) diameter, the Lover is on the larger side without being enormous.

This toy was a bit of an experiment for me, because I usually use much smaller toys, and I’ve never used anything that thrusts.

Thrusting

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the thrusting factor, but I actually ended up finding it pretty interesting conceptually. It made it easy for me to imagine myself in scenarios that would normally require another person, as well as some more fantastical scenarios, such as having sex with a sentient robot (I can’t be the only one who fantasizes about that, right?). That said… a real erect penis is moved by the hips, not by the penis itself jumping forward and backward in length. The thrusting motion is visually more uncanny than realistic.

Size

I did have a lot of trouble with the size. I used to have vaginismus, and penetration can still be somewhat challenging for me, so I usually look for smaller toys. In addition, while the soft silicone head did a lot more to cushion the metal core than I expected, it was very rigid. The girth made it difficult to insert even with lube and prep, and adding thrusting to that was often too much intensity for me. As for length, the head hit my cervix before I got anywhere close to full insertion.

Suction Cup

I experimented with various different ways of using the suction cup. I haven’t explored suction cups much before, partly because every other dildo I’ve tried won’t actually stay stuck. I was really impressed with the strength of this suction cup – it holds in place super firmly, even with how heavy the dildo is. Finding a good position was more challenging than I expected – since I wasn’t able to fully insert it, sticking it on the floor or the edge of the bathtub meant I had to uncomfortably hold my body up above it. Sticking it to the wall worked the best, but it was difficult to find room for my legs. In this case I actually appreciated the length, because it allowed me to press against the dildo without having to cram my legs against the wall as much.

My favorite part about this toy is how strong its suction cup is. I can stick it down and pull hard and it won’t budge, and it stayed stuck to my shower wall for days! The suction cup also has a pull tab that makes it easy to remove when finished. There are two big design flaws. The first is that it only comes in one very light skin tone. The second is the lack of a remote - the appeal of it being a “hands free” toy is diminished when you have to awkwardly fumble around down there for the button any time you want to change the setting.

The buttons are confusing - I still don’t understand the purpose of the upper button. They're also difficult to see, which helps the toy look more realistic, but is challenging for many. Changing modes while in use is extremely clumsy without a remote. It has no flexibility, which is a plus for some, but can make positioning difficult. Having a longer length is helpful when using the Lover with a harness, or suction cupping it to the wall. But it made it difficult to hold when lying on my back, and uncomfortable to use suctioned on the floor.

The silicone is soft and stretches to imitate skin. It is good quality, although I have encountered nicer. Around the base are some virtually unnoticeable bits of silicone left over from the mold. The thrusting modes are very loud and definitely not a toy that can be used discreetly. It does have two modes of pure vibration (no thrusting) that are extremely quiet, but you have to click through 9 noisy thrusting modes in order to get to them. As my partner put it: “That’s not the dildo I’m getting out for discreteness, that’s the dildo I’m getting out when I need to get my big gay butt POUNDED."

Currently selling for $90, the Lover is fairly reasonably priced for what it offers. It's a more affordable alternative to some of the higher-end thrusting dildos out there, and certainly a lot cheaper than getting a full-on sex machine. It's also not the cheapest option on the market, but rather a decent midline option. It is also reasonably priced as far as realistic dildos go, particularly when taking into account that it’s also a vibrator.

The Lovers' performance had a couple issues. The thruster is significantly weaker than my vaginal muscles, which can cause the thrusts to jam in place. This can be solved by taking extra time to ensure complete relaxation. This is likely a limitation of any thrusting toy short of purchasing an actual sex machine. There is also a problem with charging where the silicone protecting the charger port seems to subtly push out the charger over time. Pushing the charger in extra firmly helps, but I still often have to periodically check it and re-plug it in, which is not ideal.

While the Lover’s package boldly displays the dildo on the front, the Lover’s package (pun intended) was shipped to me in a cardboard box for discreteness. On the packaging itself are helpful, simple graphics that make it easy to understand the size, functions, and compatibility of the Lover. The information on the package is accurate, and the photo of the Lover on the box is an accurate depiction.

Made from body-safe silicone, the Lover is waterproof and easily cleaned with soap and water. Because of the electronics, it of course cannot be boiled to sterilize it, but that is true for all vibrators. The charger port appears to have a good seal to keep water out. That said, I've had multiple high end "waterproof" vibrators break after using them in the bath for a few months, so I don't necessarily recommend submerging it more than is necessary to clean it. The Lover does not come with a storage bag.

The Lover has 9 distinct modes, which are toggled through consecutively. In order, they are:

  1. Smooth (LOW)
    • This mode thrusts in a steady pattern. The ring does a smooth rotation with each thrust.
  2. Smooth (MED)
  3. Smooth (HIGH)
  4. Smooth Thrusts Choppy Rotations
  5. Choppy

  8. Smooth (MED)
  9. Smooth (HIGH)
  10. Vibrate only (LOW)
  11. Vibrate only (MED)
  12. Vibrate only (HIGH)
There is an additional button with a lightning bolt on it that temporarily switches the toy to mode number 3 for 10 seconds. (I’m not sure what the purpose of this function is).

  • Extremely strong suction cup
  • Quality body-safe materials
  • Fairly realistic
  • Variety of vibration modes
  • Rechargeable

  • Only comes in one skin tone
  • No remote
  • Rock hard core
  • Short battery life
  • Confusing buttons

Ultimately this toy is too large for me, but for others it may be too small - make sure to pull out a tape measurer and check that the size is really what you want before purchasing! I wouldn't recommend this product, but only because there are better options. Lovehoney has a dildo that appears to be identical but with an addition of a remote control, for only $10 more. If the idea of this toy appeals to you I recommend getting Lovehoney's "Lifelike Lover Luxe Silicone Magnetic Thrusting Remote Control Realistic Dildo" instead. If the general idea of this dildo appeals to you, I'd recommend buying the version with the remote. I haven't tested it so I can't say for sure, but having a remote would be a massive improvement to this product.

Unfortunately there is no online manual that is specific to the Lifelike Lover Luxe Thrusting and Rotating Dildo, nor does the Lover come with a manual. However, Lovehoney does have a Beginners Guide to Vibrators and a guide on How to Use a Vibrator that could be worth checking out, especially if this is your first vibe. For more product specific instructions, check out my How To guide above.

The silicone may initially seal over the charging port. Use the pin of the charger to break through - don't worry, you won't break it! If it is plugged in but not charger, it may not be pushed in all the way. Press in firmly until the light turns on.

The buttons are located at the base of the dildo, above the balls and close to the suction cup. They are the same color as the dildo - look carefully, or try feeling for the ridges. They are two small circles. You will only need the button closest to the head of the penis.

If the Lover is having difficulty moving, try relaxation techniques (such as more foreplay), and try using more lube. If the size is larger than you are used to, particularly for anal, start with smaller toys and work your way up.

If your product isn't working correctly, it probably has a defect. Lovehoney has a great customer service record, so contact them to see if you can get a replacement. See the Instructions & Manual section for a link to contact Lovehoney.
