  • Are looking for an affordable, approachable set of restraints
  • Like the idea of experimenting with bondage and sensory play
  • Want some comfy, padded cuffs

  • Are looking for cuffs that can stand a lot of pulling and resistance
  • Have a very large or long bed
  • Would prefer sleek, dark-colored restraints

The Fifty Shades of Grey Hard Limits Bed Restraint set is set of four adjustable bondage straps, connected by an O-ring, that go underneath your mattress for instant restraints whenever you want them! The set also comes with four Velcro-fastening cuffs, two wrist-sized and two ankle-sized, that can be clipped on and off easily. The cuffs are super soft and padded for comfy play, and the straps can be moved around depending on your preference or position. As a little bonus, the Hard Limits kit also comes with a soft blindfold and a storage pouch!

Fitting the Straps

Having read Isabelle’s review of the Sportsheets Bed Restraints, and Cassie’s review of another Fifty Shades Bed Restraint set, I had a pretty good idea of how to get the Hard Limits restraints fitted and ready. However, what I hadn’t considered was the fact that my boyfriend and I use two separate mattresses in one bed frame. That meant that, after laying out the restraints on top of the bed and adjusting the straps to what I thought would fit, I then had to strip all the bed linen off and lift up each mattress, one at a time, placing one side of straps down and then the other. This was even harder because we have very little room on either side of the bed! Would it have been easier with him there to help me? Absoutely. Did I want to wait? Absolutely not.

A Perfect Beginning to Bondage!

Both me and my boyfriend are bondage newbies, and I was looking for a product that was versatile, but non-intimidating and easy to use. I have tested out the Quickie Cuffs previously, but was looking for more of a full-body restraint experience. The Fifty Shades of Grey Hard Limits bed straps tick every box for us! It was incredibly exciting to be strapped down to the bed by a partner, and I also loved the feeling of strapping him in, too. Since the set comes with a blindfold, it’s a great way to experiment with some alternative forms of sensuality, like sensory and impact play, and to indulge in some power play as well. The padded cuffs are super soft to wear, and the Velcro makes it easy to get them on and off. However, that also means that they’re relatively easy to slip out of if you’re pulling on them a lot. For some variety, you can connect the cuffs together without using the straps, using the carabiner clips, and try out some other bondage positions.

Some Slight Sizing Issues

Our bed is 160cm wide (about 3 inches wider than a standard Queen size) and 200cm long (about the same as a Queen) — so not small, but not the biggest either. However, as I was fitting the Hard Limits straps, I realized that some of them were extended almost to their longest point. The photo you can see above shows exactly what I mean — the cuffs, especially the wrist cuffs, can’t get much closer together. However, when it came to actually using them, everything worked fine! I’m only 5′ tall, and the straps reached my wrists and ankles, both with the straps coming from the end of the bed and from the sides.

The design of the Hard Limits cuffs and blindfold seems a little tame to me — like it was made specifically to be 'non-threatening' to bondage newbies. The silver color doesn't look bad at all, but I think I would have preferred plain black. However, I do like the silky shine of the material and the soft interior! In terms of the straps, I wish that they had added an extra under-mattress strap to adjust for the length of the mattress, rather than just using an O-ring.

This set of bed restraints is relatively easy to install, especially if you only have one mattress to contend with! My favorite thing is that you don't have to take them off after use — just unclip the cuffs and tuck the straps in, and no one will be the wiser! Actually strapping someone into the restraints is also very easy thanks to the Velcro cuffs. I do recommend tightening the straps after the cuffs are on, however, rather than trying to estimate the size you need before.

I wouldn't say that the Fifty Shades of Grey Hard Limits set feels particularly luxurious, but it is a high-quality product. The cuffs are soft and silky, and the straps are made of a durable material. It will stand up well to light bondage, but isn't made for more extreme play — for example, the slide buckles are made of plastic. Additionally, the blindfold is well-made, but a sturdier elastic strap would have been nice.

At around $70, the Hard Limits Bed Restraints are fairly reasonably-priced, but also aren't the most affordable option on the market. They'll definitely hold up well, but do lack some versatility in their design, which may put some people off spending this amount on a restraint set. However, I do like that they've included a blindfold and a storage bag as some little extras.

The feeling of being restrained (or restraining a partner) is really something else, and I'm so glad I got to experience that with this product! You're not totally restricted to one position, as the straps will move a bit with you (even when tightened), but I still think it's a fantastic sensation. My partner let me know how much he enjoyed seeing me like that, which was another little benefit!

The box that this set comes in is a little flimsy, but is nice enough. It has the Fifty Shades of Grey logo at the top (which I really couldn't care less about), and a photo of the restraints on one side. Inside is a really nice box with all the materials inside, split into two compartments. If you'd like, you can use this box for storage, as it will fit all the cuffs and the straps. However, if you're going to leave the straps on the bed, the cuffs alone will also fit inside the accompanying silky storage pouch.

Both the cuffs and the straps of the Hard Limits Bed Restraints are made from polyester, the slide buckles are made from hard plastic, and the rings and clips are made from metal. I couldn't find any information as to whether the metal is nickel-free, and I also couldn't find whether this set is machine-washable. Since all the components have metal elements, you may prefer to simply wipe everything down with a clean, damp cloth.

I'm a big fan of the Fifty Shades of Grey Hard Limits Bed Restraints! They are a fantastic introduction to the world of full-body restraint, and are so exciting to use with a partner (without being scary!). While they aren't designed to stand up to more heavy-duty use, they're perfect for light bondage and exploring new scenarios with a significant other.

The Hard Limits restraint set does come with a small leaflet with some basic instructions on how to set everything up. It also has a short paragraph on using a safe word! They also suggest using this set on a chair as well as a bed, which is not something I’ve tried, but does sound fun!

These restraints are fairly versatile, but you'll still be a bit limited on how many positions you can assume. When used on a bed, you are mostly limited to lying flat on the bed, whether face up or face down. You can also use them on a chair for sitting positions, and the cuffs can also be used separately for binding the ankles or wrists together.

Yes! Simply unclip the cuffs from the bed straps and pop them on your wrists or ankles. You can clip the clips together directly, or clip each clip to the D-ring on the other cuff for more restriction.

Lovehoney state that these straps will fit any size bed, which is probably technically true, but you will be more limited if you have a very large bed. For example if you have a king or super king, you may only be able to use the straps if you have them on the ends of the bed, especially if you have shorter arms and legs.
