   Cassie Mørch
As someone who loves to use all kinds of bondage gear for my *spicy* sessions, BDSM leashes and collars are a go-to for me. I’ve tried a lot of different kinds and a lot of different brands, so I’m here to present to you Bedbible’s top picks of BDSM leashes. I’ve gone over the major pros and cons of each and rated them in terms of design, ease of use, and quality.

MaterialsFaux leather (polyurethane), nickel-free metal
LengthCollar: 23 inches, Leash: 50 inches

Our tester, Isabelle, thoroughly enjoyed using the Sportsheets Sincerely Bow Tie because of the simple yet unique design. Sure, the bow tie may not be for everyone, but it is a fairly toned-down look that will make anyone who wears it look and feel a tad more dressed up (in the kinkiest way possible). Even though the collar itself is quite thick, it’s actually quite comfortable to wear. The chain itself is also chunky and heavy which makes it feel like it can withstand a bit of a tug or two! Overall, it’s a pretty durable and simple collar and leash combo that adds a fun little flair to your kinky adventures. While it’s not a high-end product, it’s still good quality and very affordable!

The Sportsheets Leather Collar and Leash is another great option that’s a tad more beginner-friendly than our Test Winner above. It’s a bit slimmer and less sturdy which makes it less restrictive and more comfortable for a newbie to wear. As our tester, Isabelle, said: “I think it looks great on, as does my partner, and it’s comfortable enough to wear for longer periods. It’s actually easy to forget you are wearing it”.  I definitely wouldn’t recommend it for more seasoned users, as the leash is very thin and a bit stretchy too, so it’s not ideal for more intense tugging or pulling. It’s made of genuine leather, so with the proper care and maintenance it’s a pretty long-lasting item. Most beginner-friendly BDSM leashes and collars are made of faux leather which will deteriorate faster than real leather.

This novelty leash is ideal for any beginners looking to dip their toes into the word of leashes and collars. A fun, cute, and unique leash that is comfortable to wear, easy to use, and an affordable starter toy. The quality is somewhat reflected in the price and it is definitely not the highest quality leash out there. But this is why it is a great option for beginners to try out some fun new dynamics with a fun new gadget!

Fifty Shades of Grey Sweet Anticipation Collar & Leash
Length39.5 inches inches
MaterialsFaux leather, nickel-free metal
FasteningReversible buckle

I had the pleasure of testing out the Fifty Shades of Grey Sweet Anticipation Collar & Leash for myself. I really like the reversible design! It’s such a cool way to offer different style options. The swivel mechanism on the buckle itself is also just really cool. That said, this reversible feature does make it less comfortable to wear since there’s no soft padding or lining on the “inside”. It can get sticky and sweaty really quickly when wearing the collar. In addition to the surface of the material being uncomfortable, the stiffness and width of the collar itself makes it feel a lot more restrictive than all the other collars in this review. It almost feels more like a posture collar than a regular collar! Keep that in mind, if you’re a relative beginner when it comes to BDSM leashes.

Take Your Precious Jewels on a Leash

Alright, so we’ve gone over some of the best sex leashes out there. Most of them even come with a collar to match the design. Of course, your sub’s neck isn’t the only thing you can put on a leash. If you’re looking to up your leash play a tad, you might want to take a look at some different ways to put your most precious parts under (delicious) duress during your leash play!

Master Series Pussy Tugger

Master Series Pussy Tugger - Take Your Precious Jewels on a Leash
Oh yes, you read that right. A pussy tugger. Perhaps the image is self-explanatory. This device will allow you to put some restraint on your sub’s labia and attach them to a chain leash. For ultimate teasing and tugging torture, you’ll definitely be able to acitvate some serious power play with this guy.

Sex & Mischief Amor Collar with Nipple Jewelry

Sex & Mischief Amor Collar with Nipple Jewelry - Take Your Precious Jewels on a Leash
If you’re a bigger fan of involving your sub’s nipples in whatever kind of naughty tug-of-war leash play you’re doing, using something like this Amor Collar with attached nipple clamps can provide some extra stimulation to your power play.

Buckling Cock Ring/Chain Leash Set

Buckling Cock Ring/Chain Leash Set - Take Your Precious Jewels on a Leash
Yes, that is indeed a cock on a leash. The penis-owner’s answer to the “pussy tugger” above. Put your sub’s cock and balls on a leash for some intense dominance. This leash is not only for tugging and pulling purposes. The “collar” doubles as a cock ring to help maintain stronger and longer lasting erections.

BDSM Leash Safety

It’s so so important to educate yourself about the basic guidelines for safe leash play before actually trying it out.  Basically, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with the basic BDSM safety guidelines in terms of (open and on-going) communication, (freely given and reversible) consent, and (agreed upon) safewords or safe gestures to stop any play immediately. When it comes to playing with collars and leashes, there are few extras points I would like to make in terms of safety basics.

Never too tight!

Collars are simply not safe if they’re too tight. Make sure you research the sizing range of your collar beforehand so you don’t feel like you have to squeeze into something you actually can’t fit. A good rule of thumbs is that you should be able to fit two fingers under the collar comfortably. You should definitely still be able to breathe, swallow, and move your head side to side when wearing it.

Type of Collar

Be careful of any sharp edges, studs, or spikes on your collar. Not that you shouldn’t use these types of collar or leashes – you just need to be extra careful not to hurt yourself or your partner unintentionally! Also, even if you’re not sure of what type of collar you want or whether or not it will fit or you will like it, you should start out with something with velcro. This way you can get a good fit and easily abort mission if you need to.

No yanking!

When using your leash on your sub you can of course use it with however much force you have agreed upon. But one important this is never to quickly yank on the leash. Whatever level of force you choose to use, it should be in more a constant or gradual pressure and never by rapid sharp pulls! This can cause damage to the muscles in the neck or to the spine.

Never for suspension!

As obvious as it might seem, it’s still neccessary to mention that a leash should never be used a way of suspending a sub as part of some kind og suspension rig. Suspending someone from this point will likely interfere with breathing and circulation and make your sub choke.

How to Use A BDSM Leash

So, we’ve been over the basic safety rules of any leash play. You’re ready to be totally safe and consensual. And you’re eager to pamper your sub with some fun on a leash. Now we can go into all the fun ways you might actually use your brand new bondage leash! Let’s dive straight into some of the best ways I think you could really enjoy your leash!

Performing Oral

Performing Oral

A leash is a great way to control even the smallest movements in your partner’s neck. That’s why it is ideal to use it to add some spicy power play while your sub is performing oral on you. Keep them in place or tease them by keeping them out of reach. Or use the leash to force them to look at your while you perform oral on them!

Doggy Style

Doggy Style

Ah yes, the classic position for penetrative leash play. Tugging safely on your subs collar while penetrating them in doggy style is a great way to enhance the sensation of power play. First of all, you can influence their ability to breathe and make sounds, as well as controlling the placement of their head and upper body. Second of all, it’s no wonder as to why doggy style is a great position to engage in some naughty puppy play…

Standing From Behind

Standing From Behind

Pretty much the same concept as doggy style with a leash. Although standing up might provide some more room for more intense sensation. Playing with a leash while standing up also adds some literal suspension to the act. Tugging or pulling (safely!) on your subs collar, pulling their head and neck backwards while you thrust into them from behind pushing their body forward is also a great way to create some mild predicament bondage with the sensation of being pushed/pulled in different directions.

Parading the Pup

Parading the Pup

Imagine using your leash to walk your sub around your house or perhaps even at some kind of kinky party or event. Show off your sub (and your dominance) by parading them around the room, controlling their direction, speed, and perhaps even their breathing. Of course, this is also an ideal puppy play activity (both for a sexual and non-sexual setting).

Static Teasing

Static Teasing

Attach your leash to your sub’s collar and tie the leash around something sturdy. Now your sub is stuck at the length of your leash and static. You’re free to tease and torture them physically as well as psychologically. Taunt them with something they desperately want (a sex toy or sexual act of some sort) and keep it just out of reach from them. “You can have this right now, if you can reach it or make it over here”… There’s so much fun to be had with this kind of leashed teasing!

How to Clean a BDSM Leash

Depending on the material of your leash, the cleaning and maintenance process will be different. Genuine leather might enjoy some saddle shampoo and leather conditioner once a while to maintain the material. But common for metal, faux leather, genuine leather, PVC, and even nylon is that it will do well with some spot cleaning with a damp cloth after use.

FAQ

Yes, they are very safe - provided YOU use them safely! Always be sure to ensure constant consent and comfort during any bondage play. If you use your common sense, you're off to a good start. I've included an extra informational section about leash safety further down in the post. Check that out for some more information about how to use BDSM leashes safely.

This depends a lot on what you would like in your BDSM leash. Would you prefer leather, fabric, vinyl, or metal chains in your leash? Do you want a specific texture or pattern adorning your new piece of equipment? Do you want a collar attached or do you already have one? Do you want some extra attachments, like nipple clamps or a ball gag? You should consider these things when looking for a BDSM leash. Generally, I would say that it's a good idea to look for a somewhat sturdy leash that can withstand some actuall tugging and pulling.

Anyone who wants to use a BDSM leash can use them! You don't need to be a seasoned kinkster to be "allowed" to play leashes. You just need to be aware of the basic safety precautions before you start pulling at someones neck.

You can easily fashion a BDSM leash out of ordinary household items. Dog leash? Perfect. A piece of thick rope? Sure. A long belt? Great. Of course, you should exercise some basic caution when making your own DYI BDSM leash. We do not recommend making your own sex toys and always recommend that you purchase purpose-made sex toys from a reputable shop. We are in no way responsible for any harm caused due to the use or sharing of these DIYs. You are 100% responsible for the outcome should you choose to make your own sex toys.

What is a BDSM Leash?

BDSM leashes are not that different from any other regular leash. It's simply a long piece of sturdy material that can be attached to a collar around the neck of your partner, to be used to restrict or control their movements. They come in all sorts of different sizes and materials. Some are more heavy duty leashes, others are more ornamental. No matter what kind of BDSM leash you are using, it's always important to be aware of some basic BDSM safety rules to avoid any discomfort or injury during use. I've included an informational section about leash safety at the end of the post.
