6 Best Dildos for Beginners to Start Your Journey

   Cassie Mørch
I’ve tried a lot of different dildos over the years – silicone, glass, metal, textured, small, and large – you name it! Although, I remember the struggle of finding my first ever dildo. I had no idea what size range to aim for or which materials were best. That’s why I’ve created the ultimate guide for picking one out! I’ve lined up the very best options on the market for you below.
1 Test Winner

I picked out the Lovehoney Curved Suction Cup Dildo as the Test Winner of this review because it’s a great all-rounder. It combines quality materials, ergonomic design, and ease of use in one easily accessible (and affordable) product. It may look very simple but it offers more than meets the eye. Our tester, Ashley, was also a bit skeptical at first: “My first impression of the Lovehoney Curved 7″ Silicone Suction Cup Dildo was a little underwhelming at first. It didn’t look like much, and I wasn’t sure what to think about it. After using it however, I changed my mind pretty quick!” It’s a great dildo for beginners because of the slim shape and diameter of 1.5 at the widest point. It’s also super flexible which makes it seem a lot less intimidating to complete beginners. While it isn’t the slimmest dildo on this list, it’s the kind of dildo you can grow with as you get more and more comfortable with penetrative play. One of the reasons why it can be entertaining for intermediate users as well is the versatility. The flared suction cup base allows you to use it for anal penetration (and prostate stimulation), strap-on play, and for vigorous hands-free riding! The cherry on top? The small space for a bullet vibrator really amps up the pleasure you get to experience with this dildo. I know that most basic silicone dildos don’t offer this feature. It’s a minor detail but it make a lot of difference for those wanting to explore internal vibrations. According to the online reviews on Lovehoney, the vibrations also travel pretty well through the silicone which isn’t always the case with poorer quality silicone dildos.

2 Runner-Up

The Tantus Charmer is a fantastic choice for beginners. I picked it out as the runner-up to our Test Winner because it’s also a popular choice according to all the online reviewers. Isabelle, who tested it, had great things to say about it as well: “I really like the Tantus Charmer as an anal dildo, and think it’s well worth the investment. If you are looking for a dildo to use vaginally, bear in mind that, unlike many dildos, the shaft gets narrower towards the base, so you might not get that full feeling with the whole dildo inserted. You can use the tip for some good G-spot stimulation though.” The slim, tapered shaft makes it super easy and comfortable to insert, which is perfect if you’re just starting out. While the narrower base might not give you that full feeling when using it vaginally, it’s great for targeted G-spot stimulation with its tip. Having tried a Tantus dildo myself (the Tantus Cush), I know that they always deliver on high-quality silicone and generally feel very comfortable to use. The Charmer is no exception—it feels soft, body-safe, and just really nice to use. The subtle ridges on the shaft add a gentle, bead-like stimulation that’s noticeable but not too intense. As Isabelle mentioned: “The ridges have the slight feel of anal beads, as the shaft is inserted but not as intense, and they add some subtle stimulation while the toy is inside as well.” I think these ridges make the Charmer stand out compared to other beginner-friendly dildos. This is a beginner-friendly dildo that offers a little extra stimulation during thrusting but doesn’t have an overwhelming texture. I would have loved if the base featured a suction cup. In my book, dildos should always have a suction cup base! It just makes solo play that much more fun. Luckily, you can still use this dildo in a strap-on harness and for safe anal play.

The Lovehoney Slimline G-Spot Sensual Glass Dildo is my expert pick for this round-up review. Out of all the best beginner-friendly dildos out there, I simply couldn’t resist including a slim glass dildo to the mix. As an avid dildo user, I wholeheartedly recommend trying out a glass dildo – yes, even as a beginner! For those who are completely new to penetration, it may be a lot more intimidating than a flexible silicone dildo. But if you, like me, absolutely love manual g-spot or a-spot stimulation, a glass dildo like this will change your life. First of all, glass is just an amazing material for insertable sex toys. It’s non-porous, easy to clean, and can be fully sterilized. It can be used with all kinds of lube, so if you want to use it for anal penetration you can still use a nice, thick silicone lube. It’s super temperature responsive and ideal for playing around with hot and cold sensations. Last but not least, the firmness is perfect for some intense internal massage. I personally love all the benefits that glass offers. It may not be as flexible and “lifelike” as silicone, but the pros outweigh the cons for me! The double-ended design also let’s you experience different penetration sensations in one toy! Even though you won’t be able to use it in a harness, it offers more versatility for solo play. The curved tip is designed for optimal g-spot, a-spot, and even prostate massage. In terms of price, Ashley, who tested this dildo, shared her overall take: “The Lovehoney Slimline G-Spot Sensual Glass Dildo is listed at $24.99 on the Lovehoney website. It comes with a storage bag, and the toy and bag for the price is a steal!”. I totally agree with Ashley on this one. For the amount of pleasure you get to enjoy with this product, it’s a freaking steal! Most of the glass dildos that I have don’t actually come with storage bags (which does make it difficult to keep them safe from shattering, in my opinion) so that’s a big plus for such a low price.

4 Most Realistic

Blush Neo Elite 7.5″ Dual Density Dildo

 Blush Neo Elite

  • Are looking for a way to ease into dildo use.
  • Want a moderately sized dildo for strap-on play.
  • Prefer realistic dildo construction over playfully colored ones.
  • Enjoy the feel of a real penis, and want your dildo to have the same tactile effect.
  • Seek a high-quality, but moderately priced dildo for your sex toy collection.

Blush Neo Elite

  • Prefer a turgid or hard dildo.
  • Are turned off by dildos with a realistic feel.
  • Dislike flesh-colored or veined dildos.
  • Need an extra thick or long insertable to feel satisfied.

  • Realistic silicone dildo with pronounced veins and glans for a lifelike feel
  • Dual density design features a solid core and a soft outer layer of silicone.

  • Soft and flexible silicone that's super comfortable for newbies
  • Size is a perfect medium that isn't intimidating but still satisfying
  • Strong suction cup base

  • Isn't great for firm internal massage
  • The hyper-realistic design adds some texture to the trusting experience

I chose to include the Blush Neo Elite 7.5″ Dual Density Dildo in this review because it’s one of the overall best realistic dildos for beginners out there. Now, in terms of the design, I’ve definitely seen more realistically detailed dildos (like the Vixen Johnny). Although, for the low price it’s available at, I think the details are still well made. The veins and the head also add some nice texture to the experience. This obviously isn’t ideal for those who prefer a completely smooth shaft. Now, there are a lot of realistic dildos for beginners out there, but I picked out this one because it’s a dual density dildo. The solid core with the squishy exterior adds a different layer of realism that regular silicone dildo can’t deliver. After having tried a few dual density dildos myself, I’m never going back. They just feel a lot more lifelike! However, our tester, Alice, did have one note on this: “As a small point of personal preference, I did occasionally feel as though the dual density feature of this dildo, which feels so nice on the skin and is a fantastic quality, left me with the sensation that the penis I had inside of me was a bit flaccid. I usually prefer a sturdier dildo, but that didn’t deter my enjoyment of the Blush Neo Elite 7.5″ Dual Density Dildo.” I imagine that this sensation comes from the fact that this is a slimmer dildo. Either way, it’s something to keep in mind if you know that a firmer sensation is what you need. Alice really tested this dildo thoroughly and explored it for solo use, riding the suction cup, for partnered play, and for anal. Here’s what she had to say about the versatility: “I used the Blush Neo Elite 7.5″ Dual Density Dildo in a number of ways, and each of them worked wonderfully. This is a high-performance dildo with many useful applications, and I highly recommend not only this product, but creatively exploring what this product can do for you!”.

5 Adjustable Shaft

  • Prefer a bigger toy or a more bulbous tip

  • Very tapered tip makes for easy insertion (and ideal for anal adventures).

  • Poseable feature
  • Non-representational design

This unique toy deserves a spot on any ‘best dildos for beginners’ list. I love all that the Fun Factory Limba Flex M has to offer. While it definitely is on the pricier side when it comes to beginner-dildos, I really think it’s worth splurging on! Let’s dive into some of the key features that make this dildo stand out. An adjustable shaft is actually extremely rare in dildos. It’s a more common feature in rabbit vibrators. So, I’m really stoked how customizable this beginner dildo is. Our tester, Mike, tested out the Limba Flex M with his wife. According to them, once posed in the right position, it held its shape pretty well during use. “What I appreciate most is how modular this toy is. Depending on what my partner is in the mood for, we can easily bend and shape it to accommodate her desires. This adaptability is a significant advantage, as it allows us to explore various angles and positions to find what suits her best.” The modest girth and tapered tip also make this a great fit for anyone just looking to dip their toes into the world of flexible beginner dildos. The taper is definitely a pros for complete beginners, those who generally struggle with insertable toys, or for more comfortable anal play. However, if you enjoy deep g-spot massage like me, I’d opt for something with a more bulbous tip. Though the price is a little steep for beginners, it’s a worthy investment, especially if versatility is important for you! To conclude my verdict, I’ll leave you with Mike’s closing statement on this dildo: “To summarize, my experience with the Fun Factory Limba Flex M has been overwhelmingly positive. Its versatility, comfortable feel, and elegant design have enriched our intimate moments. While it has its quirks, such as strong suction and lint attraction, these minor inconveniences don’t diminish its overall appeal. This toy has brought a new level of excitement and intimacy to our relationship, and we can’t get enough of it.”

Alright, you may not think this is the most beginner-friendly dildo. I agree. It’s not my first choice for anyone who has zero experience with penetration. However, for someone who enjoys penetration during partnered sex or fingering, I do think The Boss would be a good option. It’s for those who know that they like deep penetration and g-spot massage, and are looking for their first every dildo to use solo (or to share with a partner). What I like the most about The Boss is that it’s a dildo for beginners that you can grow with. It’s still accessible for beginners but satisfying to use for more experienced users because of the firm silicone. It’s a dildo that will keep you pleased as you expand your sexual horizons! The tip is great for targeted g-spot, a-spot, and p-spot massage. It’s also anal safe and ideal for using with a strap-on harness. I actually had the pleasure of testing The Boss for myself. It was also one of my first ever dildos! I had a great experience with it. While I personally tend to reach for the dual density dildos I’ve acquired since then, I will always be grateful to this dildo for showing me how amazing internal stimulation can be. As I wrote in my review, I wish I could give The Boss a “World’s Best Boss”-mug! The suction cup base is by far the most powerful suction cup I’ve every used. Once stuck on a flat surface, that baby isn’t going anywhere! So, remember to release the seal before you yank on it (you might drag the whole chair or dresser with you!).

How to Choose a Dildo for Beginners

You might not be 100% sure what to consider when trying to select your first dildo. Here are a few things to think about while comparing your options!
  • Size – If you’ve never used a dildo before then you’ll probably want to start off with something smaller. However, if you already own a dildo (or are having penetrative sex with a partner and used to the sensation) then a standard, six-inch dildo is always a good option!
  • Material – Non-porous materials like silicone, metal, or glass are the safest options for body-safe dildos. Toys without internal electronics can be sterilized easily simply by dropping them into a pot of boiling water! Porous materials (such as TPE, PVC, or jelly) can’t be sterilized; they can only be cleaned. You’ll want to make sure to completely clean porous toys in-between uses, as these materials can harbor bacteria.
  • Shape – You’ll be able to choose between straight and curved dildos. Curved models are better at g-spot targeting (they’re also called g-spot dildos), whereas straight dildos are best for training up to larger toys, big dildos (or large body parts).
  • Design – There are plenty of designs to choose from! There are realistic dildos for lifelike pleasure, non-phallic dildos for anyone who does not want a realistic look or feel. There are also colorful dildos and even rainbow dildos for a fun splash of color. You’ll have plenty of designs to choose from!
  • Hard vs. Soft – Hard dildos work better during penetration since they can be easily angled. However, soft dildos feel more realistic to the touch. Dual-density dildos offer both advantages, being firm enough to be easily inserted but soft enough to feel realistic.
  • Use – For vaginal use, any body-safe dildo will do. However, if you’re planning on using your new dildo as an anal dildo then having a flared base (or a dildo with a handle) is a must. This will prevent the dildo from slipping inside of you, making it very difficult to retrieve!
  • Features – Even with beginner dildos, you might be able to get a few extra features for your toy! Suction cup dildos, harnesses for pegging dildos, and vibrating dildos are all features you can consider.

Best Types of Dildos for Beginners

Not sure where to start? Here’s a rundown of the best types of dildos for beginners!

Realistic

Realistic - Best Types of Dildos for Beginners
This is the best type of dildo for those looking to simulate the real experience. A high-quality, well-lubed toy can feel just like the real thing! While realistic dildos are often made of PVC or other plastics, you’re best sticking with a silicone toy, as these are far more body safe and will last much longer.

Non-Realistic

Non-Realistic - Best Types of Dildos for Beginners
If the veiny shafts of realistic dildos turn you off, non-phallic dildos are right for you. Not confined to realism, this kind of dildo can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. This is the type to go for if you’re looking for an ultra-smooth or non-realistic texture (ribbed, beaded, etc).

Anal

Anal - Best Types of Dildos for Beginners
Technically, any dildo can be used anally. But many dildos are designed with anal in mind – these often will be a little shorter, more tapered, and have a wide, flared base to ensure safe extraction. If you’re eyeing up a dildo for anal, these qualities will ensure the most pleasurable experience.

Double-Ended

Double-Ended - Best Types of Dildos for Beginners
Double-ended dildos are great for beginners because you get to experience two different sensations. There are often differences in texture and size so beginners can explore the penetrative pleasure at their own whim.

Choosing Between a Hard or Soft Dildo as Your Starter

It’s all about your comfort level, but if you’re having trouble making up your mind, here’s a few tips!

Hard

Hard - Choosing Between a Hard or Soft Dildo as Your Starter
Hard doesn’t have to mean rough! If you’re looking at hard toys, you’re likely looking at a non-realistic, and/or smaller toy (not always!). This is because larger, hard toys with lots of detail DO end up being quite rough. Hard dildos are often easier to clean and harbour fewer harmful bacteria.

Soft

Soft - Choosing Between a Hard or Soft Dildo as Your Starter
On the other hand, soft dildos hit just the spot if you’re after something realistic in aesthetic and texture. When you’re shopping for soft toys, make sure the material you’re looking at is body safe – many cheaper, soft toys will not be.

Should You Go For a Vibrator Instead?

If you’re a complete beginner to sex toys, it may feel difficult to pick between the two. It comes down to this. Which sensation do you enjoy the most? Penetration (insertion into the anus, mouth, or vagina), or vibration (internal or external)? It’s important to get to know the difference, especially if you’re on a budget and don’t want to shell out for both…

Dildo

Dildo - Should You Go For a Vibrator Instead?
Typically, dildos will be shaped like a penis, with the express purpose of penetration. With dildos, you get to play around with realism, non-realism, colours, shapes, sizes, etc. Some even vibrate! Dildos are all about wanting that feeling of fullness, so if that’s something you’re after (for instance, if you’ve enjoyed fingering), you’re in the right place.

Vibrator

Vibrator - Should You Go For a Vibrator Instead?
Vibrators can come in all shapes and sizes (we list them all in our blog post about all the different types of vibrators you need to know about). The benefit to vibrators, however, is that they can provide external as well as internal stimulation. Vibrating dildos are typically referred to as such, whereas a bespoke vibrator is a vibrating toy with the express purpose of providing stimulation that way.

How to Use a Dildo for Beginners

Dildos can seem intimidating at first, but they’re a great tool to help discover brand-new sensations, or even add to your regular routine! Now you’ve found the best dildo for beginners, experiment and find out what works for you!

Solo

Solo

Dildos are a great way to spice up your solo play! Get that satisfying full feeling and experience intense sensations with g or p spot stimulation! If you usually use a clitoral vibrator, try adding a dildo to take your orgasms to the next level.

Suction cup

Suction cup

With a suction cup, you can leave your hands free to explore other parts of your body, or perhaps use a clitoral vibrator for added stimulation! Use in front of a mirror with your partner to give them an extra sexy view, or get wet and wild in the shower!

With a harness

With a harness

A strap-on (or strapless strap-on) can be a great way to take intimacy to the next level. These can be used by anyone – they’re great for couples that both have vulvae (who knew that was the plural!) but can also be used for pegging, or if you have a penis and struggle with erectile dysfunction! Strap-ons allow you to go hands free in the bedroom, so they’re perfect for couples!

Use lube

Use lube

Repeat after me: I will not use a dildo without lubing up first. Lack of lubrication can lead to mild-intense discomfort, wither you’re using solo, as a couple, anally, vaginally, or with a harness. Be sure to check on the best lube to use for your toys: silicone lube can degrade the quality of silicone sex toys, and water-based lube doesn’t last as long!

How to Clean a Dildo for Beginners

A 'best dildos for beginners' list wouldn't be complete without a thorough guide on how to clean. Because dildos come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, it's important to check the details for your specific toy before you clean it. Below is a summary of how to clean the most common dildo materials! It is critical to clean your dildo before and after use, to avoid bacteria infiltrating your vagina, anus, or mouth. To clean, you'll need: warm water, sex toy cleaner/antibacterial soap, and a clean, dry towel. If your double dildo is made from a non-porous material (which is most common), it won't absorb bacteria easily, however you still need to thoroughly clean it to ensure you avoid any nasty bacteria entering your system! Non-porous materials include: silicone, borosilicate glass, lucite, stainless steel etc. Porous materials include: jelly, PVC, vinyl, rubber etc. Cleaning different types of dildos: Vibrator/motorized toys: Never submerge your motorized toys in water! (If battery powered, take the batteries out before cleaning). The easiest way to clean them is to wipe them down using a warm, damp cloth with antibacterial soap. Be sure to either air dry thoroughly, or dry with a towel until bone dry. Non-porous materials/porous materials: If not motorized, feel free to submerge your toy in warm soapy water, and thoroughly dry before storing. For porous materials, bacteria can build up over time in the pores of the toy, which means you should take extra care when cleaning, and ensure the toy is bone dry before storing. Glass/Stainless Steel: You can safely boil your borosilicate glass, and stainless steel toy to sterilize them; borosilicate glass is highly resistant to thermal shock, meaning it is safe to boil (and this is why it's great for temperature play!). When your toys are clean and thoroughly dry, you should store them safely; find a place where you can store your toy(s) with plenty of room for others, and where they will be kept away from anything like dust or wetness- these will only cause bacteria to develop!

FAQ

The only way to guarantee a dildo is completely body safe is to make sure it is made of a non-porous material such as silicone, glass, or metal. PVC and other plastics are often used in cheaper sex toys, so your best bet is to wear a condom over those to prevent bacteria from building up in the toy.

Silicone lube will slowly degrade the quality of silicone toys, so it's best to use water-based lube for those. Other than that, most materials will be safe to us with silicone lube — the benefit is it tends to last much longer! It's just tricker to wash out.

We highly recommend cleaning before and after each use, in order to avoid the transfer of unsafe bacteria. This will also help your toy last longer! You'll also want to clean between switching from vaginal to anal penetration, and the other way around.

It may be more comfortable for you to locate the g-spot with your fingers first - you're looking for a rough patch inside the vagina that feels incredible to touch. Once you're in your preferred position, ensure the curve of the dildo is in the direction of the clitoris on the outside, as the g-spot is located just around there internally! 'Rubbing' the g-spot with a thrusting motion is key to achieving g-spot orgasm!

You can also stimulate the p-spot internally with a dildo! As with the g-spot, it may be best to try and locate it with your fingers first, as it can be uncomfortable to do so with a toy. The p-spot is located about two inches into the rectum towards the stomach, and should feel like a small, walnut shaped gland.

A dildo for beginners is a dildo that’s simple, easy to use, and relatively easy to clean, making it perfect for first-timers! Unlike more advanced dildos, these dildos don’t have any additional features like vibrations or thrusting. Instead, they offer high-quality materials, stimulating shapes, affordable prices, and conservative insertable lengths.

What is a dildo for beginners?

A dildo for beginners is a dildo that's sized with the beginner in mind. Generally speaking, these dildos will be between 3 to 5.1 inches in length, with a maximum girth of 1.56 inches. These smaller measurements offer a gentle introduction to penetration, providing sexual satisfaction without overwhelming the first-timer user. Like other dildos, there are many different variations available including realistic, non-realistic, straight, curved, and vibrating. Prices vary but are largely dependent on the materials used, the brand on the label, and any additional features the toy may offer.
