The Most Popular Dildo Size [+10 Buying Statistics]

With a plethora of dildos out there, narrowing down the best-selling dildo sizes wasn’t the easiest of tasks.

However, I scoured the internet, read hundreds of articles and medical studies, and poked around sex toy retailers’ websites, going through their best-sellers lists.

I even went as far as interviewing several dildo smiths to get the inside scoop on their best-selling dildo sizes.

What I came up with are 3 exciting perspectives on best-selling dildo sizes and how mass-manufactured dildos differ somewhat from custom, hand-poured dongs.

Key statistics

• Most users prefer dildos that are between 6-7 inches in length.
• The average dildo has a usable length of 6.54 inches (16.6 cm).
• The full length of the average dildo, including non-insertable parts, is 7.52 inches (19.1 cm).
• The girth of the average dildo is 4.65 inches (11.82 cm).
• The average erect penis measures 5.16 inches (13.1 cm) in length.
• The girth of the average erect penis is 4.59 inches (11.7 cm).
• Based on various studies, the average flaccid penis is approximately 3.61 inches (9.16 cm) long.
• The preferred dildo size is slightly longer than the average erect penis.
• The girth of the average dildo and the average erect penis are very similar, with only a slight difference.
• Dildos are designed with extra length to accommodate handles or bases.
• Dildos with larger or extreme girths are typically made from soft and flexible materials.
• Despite the variety in dildo sizes, the majority of users seem to prefer sizes close to natural human dimensions.

Best-Selling Dildos by Length

The global sex toy market is booming to the tune of $33.64 billion. That’s a lot of sex toys! But, with all sorts of sex toy types available, how much of that cash was spent on dildos? Quite a bit, according to my research! People still gravitate to simple, satisfying sex toys.

So, with all of those dildos being sold, you may be curious as to the best-selling dildo sizes in length and girth.

The first perspective I am sharing is the most popular dildo lengths. I compiled statistics taken from online articles, medical research papers, and best-seller lists from some of the most popular online sex toy retailers. Below, I get into more dildo detail. But for now, here are statistics on the best-selling dildo sizes in length.

Best-Selling Dildos by Girth

The best-selling dildo sizes by girth were calculated in the same way as the length. However, not all sites focused on the thickness of the dong – which surprised me as girth has always been more important to most buyers than length. Therefore, the participants are slightly different.

Are Mass-Manufactured Dildos Massive?

When I refer to “mass manufactured” dildos, I’m covering the dongs that fly off the assembly lines by the millions and are sold by adult shops online and in brick-and-mortar stores. In comparison – and growing in popularity – are custom dildo shops (which I cover, in-depth, below). So, you would think that mass-manufactured sex toys would only make what sells, right?

Of course.

Lovehoney sells some pretty impressively-sized dildos with their longest dildo measuring in at 13.5” and their thickest dildo an eye-watering 10” – yikes. And although the biggest dildos aren’t necessarily the best-selling dildo sizes, they absolutely do sell or the stores simply wouldn’t continue to take up virtual and in-person shelf space.

But whether these big boys made it onto the best-seller’s graphs or not is beside the point as they just aren’t as popular as the average-sized dongs. Here are the sex toy retailers I visited to get their best-selling dildos stats- along with Lovehoney:

• Adam and Eve
• The Lion’s Den
• Pink Cherry
• The Sex Shop
• Good Vibes

These retailers were chosen simply because they maintained best-seller lists that included dildos. I wish more retailers did this in order to help new customers discover the most popular, best-selling sex toys.

Lovehoney’s Best-Selling Dildo Sizes

Lovehoney is the largest sex toy retailer in the world and they share all sorts of buyer statistics with the public via fun polls and articles. One of their best and most useful polls was from their Dildo Month.

Lovehoney polled over 11,400 sex toy enthusiasts worldwide and found that 70% of American sex toy users own a dildo with 78% of them being female and 65% male. But size is what matters in this article and Lovehoney did not disappoint in covering those stats!

Their Dildo Month poll revealed that 27% of buyers chose dildos that were 4-5” in length but the most popular sizes were from 5.5” to 6.5” in length for 40% of those polled. The big dongs didn’t get as much love though with only 4-5% of sex toy buyers snatching up dildos in excess of 10.5”.

What Medical Science Says About Dildo Size

During my adventure to find the best-selling dildo sizes, I happened upon 3 scientific, medical research studies that used length and girth in their research.

Some of the studies used statistics from sex toy retailers for comparison, all of which I included in my comparison graphs above.

Study 1

How Big is Too Big? The Girth of Bestselling Insertive Sex Toys to Guide Maximal Neophallus Dimensions by Dylan Isaacson, Roxana Aghili, Non Wongwittavas and Maurice Garcia 4. From the study:

“In our practice we have encountered 4 female-to-male transgender patients seeking neophallus revision surgery for girth precluding penetrative vaginal or anal intercourse.

Despite this, there is little evidence available to guide transitioning patients in neophallus sizing. In this work we examined the dimensions of bestselling realistic dildos, presuming that the most popular dimensions would reflect population preferences for penetrative toys and phalluses.

We collected measurements for “realistic dildos” designated as bestsellers for the top 5 Alexa.com-rated online adult retailers in the United States and for Amazon.com.

We compared these with measurements of dildos available at Good Vibrations in San Francisco and with studies of erect natal dimensions.

We compared all data with measurements of 4 index patients whose neophallus girth prevented penetrative intercourse.

Outcomes: Length and circumference of overall bestselling and largest bestselling realistic dildos as reported on top websites and measured by investigators.”

Study 2

Vibrators and other sex toys are commonly recommended to patients, but does size matter? Dimensions of commonly sold products by Debby Herbenick, Kathryn J Barnhart, Karly Beavers, Stephanie Benge. Information I used from this study was taken from their median average best-selling dildo sizes from 8 sex toy retailers.

“Introduction: Vibrators and dildos are commonly used by women and men in the United States, and are increasingly recommended by clinicians. In addition, sex toys and various household objects are sometimes used for sexual stimulation in ways that pose health risks to their users. Data about the dimensions of such products may inform clinicians’ recommendations.

Aim: The purpose of the present study was to assess the sizes (length and circumference) of vibrators and dildos marketed for vaginal or anal insertion on websites that sell sexual enhancement products.

Methods: Eight websites that sell sexual enhancement products were identified for inclusion in the study. The dimensions of vaginal vibrators and dildos listed for sale on each website were noted, and descriptive data were calculated for each website.

Results: Popular sex toy distributers offer a variety of product sizes. The length of many vibrators and dildos was sized between 4 and 6 in, and circumference was between 4 and 5 in. However, some companies featured products of a considerably larger size than others.

Conclusion: Length and circumference of vibrators and dildos varied, but on average approximated mean penile dimensions. Clinicians’ recommendations for use of vaginal or anal products can be enhanced by familiarity and offering additional information about product sizes and retailers.”

Study 3

This study was my favorite as it compared 3D dildo models chosen by study participants for one-night-stands in comparison to long-term sexual relationships. Plus, the study highlighted that the female perspective is often skewed when putting actual measurements to penis sizes.

In the end, study participants chose the smaller 3D models for long-term relationships. Listen up guys, bigger isn’t always better!

Now, this study didn’t include best-selling dildo sizes. However, it included the size choices made by the study participants which, in my opinion, should be counted toward popular dildo sizes simply because of the manner in which the data was collected.

Women’s Preferences for Penis Size: A New Research Method Using Selection among 3D Models by Nicole Prause, Jaymie Park, Shannon Leung and Geoffrey Mille.

“Women’s preferences for penis size may affect men’s comfort with their own bodies and may have implications for sexual health. Studies of women’s penis size preferences typically have relied on their abstract ratings or selecting amongst 2D, flaccid images. This study used haptic stimuli to allow assessment of women’s size recall accuracy for the first time, as well as examine their preferences for erect penis sizes in different relationship contexts.”

Best-Selling Dildo Sizes Around the Web

The next bunch of statistics I pulled came from articles around the internet. Some of the articles were small, independent polls and blog posts as well as articles written by popular, mainstream periodicals with a separate online presence.

1. Women’s Health Australia

This particular article was written about another Lovehoney poll of clients and customers. However, this poll was all about Aussies! According to the article, Lovehoney polled over 1,000 Aussies about their sex toy usage and 60% said they own a dildo with the most popular size being 6” in length. But 33% of those polled preferred a length of 7” and 29% preferred a full 8”.

A smaller percentage – 22% – went for the 5” dildo.

Furthermore, when shopping for a dildo, here’s what Australian sex toy users desired most:

• 36.9% shopped for girth
• 32.5% shopped for length
• 22.8% want the convenience of remote control (vibrating dildos)

2. The Thruster

Although Google search statistics can help retailers and bloggers in so many ways, these stats aren’t indicative of actual best-selling dildo sizes. In fact, many of those searches can be attributed to people looking for videos of people using dildos of that size as well as curious teenagers gathered around a laptop giggling.

We had to dig through our parent’s closets and under their mattresses for dirty magazines to gather ‘round and giggle.

Nonetheless, Thuster gathered information based on Google search statistics as well as their own sales of dildos. Their numbers were factored into my research and graphs above.

3. Down the Rabbit Hole

Once in a while, when you’re researching for an article, you stumble upon something that glows like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. This article was my pot of gold!

The article, titled “Down the Rabbit Hole: What One Million Sex Toy Sales Reveal About Our Erotic Tastes, Kinks and Desires” and written by Jon Millward is a treasure trove of sex toy statistics. He was privy to Lovehoney’s 4.5 million sales transactions, 11 million customers and 45 thousand reviews as well as their massive warehouse filled with dildos, vibrators, lingerie and other adult products.

I hear the theme to Willy Wonka playing in my head.

Along with several brilliant graphics and oodles of sex toy statistics, Jon discovered important information in regard to the best-selling dildo sizes. From the article:

“Men do in fact buy larger dildos at a higher rate than women.

 The graph (above) shows that dildos under 7.5 inches long are bought at a higher rate by women than men, whereas those over 7.5 are more popular with guys.

This isn’t a function of sexual orientation, either.

35% of single straight men buy a realistic dildo that is 8 or more inches long (as do 35% of single gay men), compared to 30% of attached straight men, 25% of single straight women and 20% of attached straight women.”

4. Hump Stump

The husband and wife blogging duo at Hump Stump penned this amazing article on penis and dildo size. Most importantly, they pointed out that dildos are often bigger than the average penis. Add to that the female perception of penis size being skewed, as mentioned above in one of the medical research studies, and you have all sorts of size misconceptions. From Hump Stump’s blog:

“Size has been a hot topic around the office for the last few weeks. The size of toys, the size of men, the sizes women like and the perception of size.

 The one conclusion we have come to is that dildos are big. All of them. And truthfully bigger than girls like. So what gives?

In fact, when we were working with realistic dildos the other day we realized just how hard it is to find a normal-sized sex toy.

For over 98% of women, it would be extremely difficult to find a dildo that is the same size as their husband. Dildos are just big.”

The couple pulled some statistics through readers and Facebook surveys and put the numbers together and discovered that women’s perceptions of penis size is distorted due to many factors; those include big penis porn, penis enlargement marketing and dildos made larger than the average human penis.

Size Matters! Or Does it?

According to Hump Stump it seems we ladies aren’t good at eyeballing penis size. So, it would only make sense that we would buy bigger dildos. That does nothing to boost the self-esteem of the penis owners as dildo envy is a real thing. As a matter of fact, there is an entire Reddit group dedicated to average size dick problems. And dildo sizes are a bit of a sore spot – no pun intended.

But there were a couple of dildo users that set the guys straight, responding to the thread on dildo sizes and reassuring the average dick members that bigger isn’t always better.

From one user:

“I was overzealous purchasing a “big one” from LoveHoney a while back. Now it just sits in my toy box.

 I’m lucky if I get the courage to grab it once a month; I have to prepare mentally for that nonsense and usually take a fair amount of time out of my evening for it.”

Used it only 5 times barely got the whole thang in shit was to (sic) painful and I would bleed after no matter how slow I go…!!”

While some females (and males) may buy bigger dildos because our perception is wonky, there are people out there that love bigger dildos. And even though most may go to popular online sex toy retailers, many of them turn to the kings and queens of fantasy dildos….the custom dildo creators.

Gaining in popularity and still widely unknown to some, small, dildo artisans are becoming the go-to sources for body-safe, custom dildos. Therefore, I felt it was important to include these dildo sellers in my statistics of best-selling dildo sizes.

Best-Selling Dildo Sizes by Custom Dildo Artisans

I interviewed 12 small dildo companies and dildo-smiths that design, create molds and hand pour the most beautiful dildos on the market, using only the highest quality materials. You won’t see these babies mass manufactured, as most all are one-of-a-kind creations. Here are the best-selling dildo sizes stats from the custom dildo scene.

Custom Best-Sellers by Girth

Girth was a bit harder to pin down as many of the custom dildos have knots and bumps that can change the overall shaft girth by more than 2-3”. So, I used the largest girth on the shaft of their best-selling dildos. Here are their best sellers by girth.

Are Custom Dildos Just for Size Queens (and Kings)?

You would think that these fantasy dildos would cater only to those who love enormous dildos but nothing could be further from the truth. According to Derek from Amavidi:

“We purposely focus on this size range as opposed to the larger fantasy sizes as we want our products to be approachable to a wide variety of folks.

We want to be the second/third toy in someone’s collection. The first, often bought without a lot of knowledge while the second or third toy is when people start to become aware of body-safe materials etc.

We want to be the “gateway” that people use to move away from jelly and TPR/TPE toys. From there, if they want to go up in size then there are other options and we’ll happily point them in the right direction. But we want to be approachable and affordable to bring in folks who are new to the silicone market.”

According to Derek, Amavidi’s best-selling dildos are the Metropol, Strupala (as pictured above) and The Doh with The Doh being 7″ in length and 4.31” in girth.

Want a Bigger Dildo? They Can Create it!

The vast majority of small, artisan dildo-smiths create dildos that are unlike anything you’ve seen before. However, they do create them in various sizes. Here are the shops I spoke to and a little bit of information on their best-selling dildos that were used in the graphs above.

Moonset Creations

Moonset Creations told me that their best-selling dildo model is the Tritan, in the mortal size, as shown in the photo above and is a fantasy dildo. I appreciate the size comparison they use – a soda can – which helps a great deal with size perception. In addition, the Tritan is the perfect example showing how some custom-made dildos include knots and bumps that change the girth of the dildo.

Howling Rabbit Hole

When it comes the to best-selling dildo sizes of custom dildo-smiths, the girth isn’t always as girthy as even mass manufactured dildos. The best example is the Howling Rabbit Hole’s best seller, the Dragon. This beautiful dildo is more narrow, getting larger toward the base and features a twist from tip to bottom. The Dragon measures 8” in length (7” insertable) and 2.5” girth.

According to a representative of the Howling Rabbit Hole, they have had some interest in larger models but have yet to add any to their collection.

Celestial Fluff

Celestial Fluff creates several, hand-poured, silicone dildos which include models like The Viper and Slickster. But according to this custom dildo creator, their best-selling dildo size measures in at 7” in length with 6” being insertable.

Nerd Climax

Nerd Climax creates a wide variety of handmade sex toys from strokers to dildos with their best-selling dildo sizes being 7” in length.

Velvet Alley

Velvet Alley’s top-selling dildo is their Legacy which measures a full 8.5” in length (6.5” usable) and a girth that varies between 3.5” and 5.5”. The twisty shaft and animalistic skull base make this unique dildo a true fantasy sex toy.

Blackfang Labs

When asked about their best-selling dildo sizes, Blackfang Labs tells me, “By far the most popular are regular sizes. A lot of people, however, like knotting toys. In these cases the size might double.”

And boy do those knots make a difference! Their Wairu Dragon Tiger dildo (pictured above) measures 8.9” in length, with an insertable 7.3”. But when we measure this dildo’s girth, the knots vary from 2.4” to 7.5”.

Neotori Toys

Martin, from Neotori Toys says, “The medium and small Mundir account for 60-70% of overall sales with the size small version a close second.”

The Mundir the Wolf dildo certainly is a gorgeous piece of hand-poured art with the medium size measuring 8.9” in length with 7.3” being usable. Mundir’s girth measurement is 6.2” at the largest point.

Monster Smash Toys

Monster Smash Toys is a UK company creating hand-poured, platinum silicone, monster-inspired sex toys. According to a Monster Smash spokesperson, medium by far is the most popular size with Uncle Gilbert topping their best-selling list. The Uncle Gilbert, man-fish inspired fantasy dildo measures 7.5” in length with 6” insertable and a girth ranging from 5” to 7”.

Phreak

Phreak is another custom sex toy maker from the UK. According to a Phreak representative, their small and medium Dovah are their best-sellers and happen to be a 2021 Altporn Awards nominee. The small and medium sized Dovah dildos measure between 7.5” and 9” in length and come in a variety of colors and firmness levels so you can customize the dildo of your dreams.

AKrows Nest

AKrow’s Nest creates a sensual and beautiful variety of unique, body-safe dildos and kegel toys. According to AKrows Nest, their best-selling dildo sizes are 4.5” in length and 3-6.5” inches in girth which are more comparable to the average penis size.

Dirty Birdy Toys

Dirty Birdy Toys also creates unique, hand-poured, silicone toys. The artist tells me that their best-selling dildos are 6″ in length and 4.7” in girth, just above the average penis size. I happen to own a Louis Thermo model and he is a fantastic, color-changing dildo. From their site:

“It is colored with (body safe) thermochromic pigment. That means it is one color at room temperature, and changes to another when heated up-for instance, with body temperature.

Louis has a gentle curve, a slightly bulbous head, and a friendly, semi-realistic shape. The insertable length is 5.75 inches, with a 1.25 inch diameter.”

If the Dildo Fits

When it comes down to it, best-selling dildo sizes don’t have a great deal to do with personal preference. Some of us prefer a comfortable and average dildo that gets the job done. However, there are size lovers among us that want nothing more than the feeling of stretching beyond measure and being filled up entirely.

Regardless of the size you choose, what matters in the end is that you are sexually satisfied during couples’ sex or those long and satisfying solo sessions.
