5 Best BDSM Whips

   Cassie Mørch
I’m a huge fan intense impact play, and I’ve tested quite a few different types of BDSM whips in my day. In this post, I’ve rounded up the best BDSM whips that we’ve tested here at Bedbible. I’ve created an overview over each products’ main upsides and downsides. I’ve also included insights from our testers’ personal experience so you know exactly what kind of sensations you can expect. Let’s dive in!
1 Test Winner

Tantus Tawse Small

  • Handle can be used for vaginal or anal penetration.

  • Versatile design

I picked out the Tantus Tawse Small as the Test Winner in this review because it is one of the most impressive and intense impact toys I have ever tried. It may look small and slightly innocuous but the dense silicone delivers quite a sting when wielded properly! For anyone who has not tried a BDSM whip or paddle made of 100% silicone, I can highly recommend it. There’s nothing like it! It doesn’t take much force to get some serious impact. That’s why it also takes a bit of practice to master. The Tantus Tawse Small is a bit floppy and this can be a bit tricky to get used to. Other than being able to submerge it in water for cleaning or being able to sterilize it completely, I love how the silicone allows you to use this whip for penetration as well. There’s really nothing quite like being penetrated (and pleasured) by the one thing that’s been causing you “harm” during a heated BDSM session. All in all, this is a fantastic BDSM whip that feels a lot more intimidating than it looks!

2 Runner-Up

DOMINIX Deluxe Thick Leather Flogger

 DOMINIX Deluxe Thick Leather Flogger

DOMINIX Deluxe Thick Leather Flogger

  • Medium-sized flogger
  • Made of genuine leather
  • 48 falls.

  • Durable and longlasting (wth proper care)
  • Comfortably weighted
  • Makes a great sound upon impact

  • Takes a bit of practice to master
  • Pricey
DOMINIX Deluxe Thick Leather Flogger

The DOMINIX Deluxe Thick Leather Flogger is another great option for anyone who loves some intense lashings. While this is definitely more of a flogger than a whip, I still think it deserved a spot in this review because of its performance. For our tester, Lea, it wasn’t a perfect fit in terms of size: “I have rather small hands and I personally find it a bit too big and I find the laces a bit too long which doesn’t make it the easiest to handle.” Other than that, she found that it, in general, “is a good quality leather flogger that can deliver some strong impact.” The slightly weighted leather flogger is definitely well suited for more experienced and even advanced users. Of course, one has to be aware that “because of its size, it requires more distance to be able to target where one wants the impact to land on the body.” The genuine leather is also a lot more long-lasting and durable compared to a lot of vegan leather alternatives. Although, keep in mind that maintenance is important. Clean and condition the leather once in a while with saddle soap and leather conditioner.

3 Budget-Friendly

Sex & Mischief Silicone Tickler

 Sex & Mischief Silicone Tickler

Sex & Mischief Silicone Tickler

  • Long and slender silicone tickler
  • Silicone falls
  • Rubber handle
  • ABS plastic wand

  • Affordable and versatile
  • Nice and stingy when used as a whip
  • Soft and smooth when used as a tickler
  • Silicone falls are easy to clean

  • Quality is a bit lacking

Now, for stingy lashings that won’t break the bank, I can highly recommend the Sex & Mischief Silicone Tickler. This is basically a small BDSM whip and a tickler in one. It’s super beginner-friendly, surprisingly versatile, and an affordable alternative to a full-sized BDSM whip. I was the lucky tester of the Sex & Mischief Silicone Tickler. At first I was a bit skeptical about the quality since it was so cheap and didn’t come in any packaging. Although, after using it a few times, I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it felt. As a tickler, the soft silicone falls feel really nice when dragged across the skin. The silicone feels a bit cold (which is a nice touch) and it tickles delightfully! For more sharp sensations and some light impact play, lashing the silicone falls at sensitive parts of the body feels great. Since the falls are made of silicone, they’re safe to use on intimate areas and super easy to clean afterwards. I particularly liked using it on the clitoris and my partner’s scrotum and peineum.

4 Best Flogger

Sportsheets Saffron Braided Flogger

 Sportsheets Saffron Braided Flogger

Sportsheets Saffron Braided Flogger

  • Braided flogger with cat-o’-nine-tails
  • Made of vegan PU leather
  • Black and red design
  • Beaded handle with a wrist loop.

  • Vegan-friendly materials
  • Heavier tails for more impact
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Stunning design

  • Not as long-lasting as genuine leather
  • May be too heavy for some
Sportsheets Saffron Braided Flogger
LengthFlogger: 24 inches, Falls: 17 inches
MaterialsPU Faux Leather, Nylon
WaterproofNo

The Sportsheets Saffron Braided Flogger is a step in the right direction for those who want more intense impact play. Its falls are heavier and the cat-o’-nine-tails deliver a deliciously sharp bite. I am also partial to the gorgeous black and red design as well the braided look. In terms of performance and suitable experience levels, our tester, Theo, did note that “it’s a little heavy for the start of a scene, but is good for amping things up once things are going. This isn’t going to be a lifetime investment, but it will get the job done.” It delivers mostly thuddy thwacks but these were “accented by a stingy bite”, and he found that it swung nicely. As with most vegan leather, it’s not as durable or long-lasting as a genuine leather item. However, Theo did find that it got the job done and that he “personally find(s) the texture to be similar enough not to mind.”

5 Best Riding Crop

Bondage Boutique Skip a Beat Riding Crop

 Bondage Boutique Skip a Beat

Bondage Boutique Skip a Beat

  • Heart-shaped riding crop
  • Tip is made of body-safe silicone
  • Plastic handle (18 inches).

  • The tip is super easy to clean
  • Feels amazing to use on the nipples, clit, or labia
  • Delivers sharp and stingy sensations

  • Even light taps can easily feel too sharp
  • Plastic handle doesn't seem very durable
Bondage Boutique Skip a Beat
Length18 inches
MaterialsSilicone, hard plastic
WaterproofYes (silicone parts)

“My heart did skip a beat for this sweet but spicy spanker! I love the cute heart design that’s just a little more fun than a standard crop.” That’s how our tester, Isabelle, started her review of the Bondage Boutique Skip a Beat Riding Crop. She is “also a big fan of anything silicone! It creates a lovely crisp spank and can be cleaned easily.” I also love the fact that the tip of this crop is made of silicone. This just makes it so much easier to use on intimate areas without worrying about the material. Because of the length and weight of this crop, it is particularly good for swatting on your nipples, clitoris, scrotum, or perineum. That said, it isn’t just for gentler impact. The silicone can provide a really sharp sting when wielded properly! Therefore, it’s a super versatile crop that can be used for teasing foreplay or relentless punishing depending on your mood. Oh, and the cute heart design does add a nice touch!

BDSM Whips vs Floggers: A Deep Dive Into the Difference

The names ‘whip’ and ‘flogger’ are sometimes used interchangeably, but there are some differences, and similarities, so, let’s have a look at some of them.

Stingy and Thuddy and Sharp, Oh My!

If someone asked you which was better, sex whips or floggers, you’d have a hard time answering. Both are fantastic for exploring sensation play but there are some key differences in design and sensation! So let’s take a look at what makes them so uniquely individual!
  • Design – here’s the most obvious divergence between floggers and whips! Whips contain a handle with a long, slim, flexible tail that can be lashed and literally whipped against someone. Floggers on the other hand have multiple tails or “falls” that can come in loads of different size and numbers. Depending on this, some floggers can feel similar to sex whip or have more of a “thuddy” impact, if the fails are broad and heavy. Some people prefer whips, some prefer floggers. It’s all down to personal taste, but floggers are often more suitable for complete beginners.
  • Pros and cons – There are definitely pros and cons to both the sex whip and the flogger. These are relatively subjective pros and cons of course, but still! Floggers may feel harsher and leave bigger, wider marks that may be painful. Whips on the other hand can leave thin, targeted marks that could – if taken too far – break the skin. On the other hand they both provide different sensations that are sexy in their own ways. This leads us neatly onto the next section…
  • Thuddy vs Stingy – Because of the shape of floggers they give you a much more impactful ‘thud’ as it hits you. That larger surface area only makes the thud deeper and more sensual (if you like that kind of thing)! On the other hand, sex whips, BDSM crops and canes sting. The tails hit only a narrow, thin strip of your skin, and as such it causes a pleasurable and concentrated sting.

Let's have a look at some similarities

Let's have a look at some similarities - BDSM Whips vs Floggers: A Deep Dive Into the Difference
  • They both have a rigid handle.
  • They both sometimes have a wrist loop for extra security, control that can be used for hanging it up.
  • They both come in different lengths, sizes and materials.
  • They can both be used in a variety of different ways for different sensations.
  • They can both have multiple tails/tresses.
  • They are both used in impact play.

The differences in tails/tresses

The differences in tails/tresses - BDSM Whips vs Floggers: A Deep Dive Into the Difference
  • Sex whips tend to have fewer tails than floggers.
  • Flogger tails can be made from softer materials like suede, rubber, even fabric as well as more sturdy materials such as leather or faux-leather.
  • Sex whip tails tend to be made of of leather or faux-leather with a ‘popper’ at the end.

The differences in sensations

The differences in sensations - BDSM Whips vs Floggers: A Deep Dive Into the Difference
  • Sex whips and floggers can both be used to trail across the skin, to build anticipation, to tease, to tickle to strike.
  • Floggers, because they have more tails and the tails can be of different thicknesses and weight, can elicit a wide variety of sensations depending on the level of force used.
  • A strike from a flogger can feel like a ‘thud’ or can sting
  • A strike from a sex whip will sting and cause more intense pain.

For beginners or advanced?

For beginners or advanced? - BDSM Whips vs Floggers: A Deep Dive Into the Difference
  • Low-intensity floggers can be used by beginners.
  • These let you build up your practice, figure out what your likes and dislikes are, and see if you’d like to venture into more stronger pain sensations.
  • Although sex whips can be used to tease, they can also cause more intense pain.
  • Sex whips aren’t recommended for beginners. They need practice and skill before using them on a person as incorrect use can be very painful and damaging.
  • Sex whips are only recommended for advanced BDSM practitioners.

Benefits Of Using BDSM Whips

If you’re new to the whole concept of BDSM whips, you might have been itching to ask the question: why would people use BDSM whips? Well, the answer may either seem confusing or it may be quite simple to you, but I guarantee you that there are many reasons as to why people would want to use sex whips in their kinky session. So, let’s go over some of benefits there are to using BDSM whips.

Gadgets are always handy!

If you love adding a bit of intense impact play to your kinky sessions and want give your hand a break from delivering those stingy spanks, then adding a BDSM whip to your repertoire is a great option! Using a BDSM whip instead will also provide a more intense sting and let you put some more power in your lash.

Versatility is key!

Versatility is key! - Benefits Of Using BDSM Whips
Depending on the size and design of your chosen BDSM whip, you’re gonna be able to create both super gentle tickler-like sensations by dragging the tail or falls across some sensitive skin as part of sensation play OR make your partner’s skin burn and tingle from super intense (always consensual) lashings. The world is your oyster when you’re using a sex whip!

Expand Your Kinky Horizon

Expand Your Kinky Horizon - Benefits Of Using BDSM Whips
Kinkiness exists on a continuum and can be practiced at any intensity level. No matter where you are in your kinky journey, a BDSM whip is a great way to expand your horizon when it comes to BDSM and impact play. It’s a great tool to involve all kinds of kinky practices! It can elevate any (appropriate) sexual situation and doesn’t require any additional gadgets or prep.

It hurts so good...

It hurts so good... - Benefits Of Using BDSM Whips
Intense impact play always has the potential to be painful… in all the right ways. If you and your partner are practicing open communication at all times and are aware of each other’s limits, using a BDSM whip to explore your boundaries when it comes to that good kind of pain can feel really great!

Things to Consider Before Buying a BDSM Whip

So, let me guess. After reading all this you’re definitely thinking of getting a BDSM whip for yourself. Well, I’m here to guide you in making sure you get the right fit for you.

Design: Size & Shape

Design: Size & Shape - Things to Consider Before Buying a BDSM Whip
You’re going to want to make sure that you’re not overwhelming yourself with a BDSM whip that’s way to big for you. This doesn’t really have that much to do with how big it looks but moreso the effect. A bigger and longer sex whip will allow you to take bigger swings that pack a lot more power with the help of basic aerodynamics! A smaller and short whip may give you more control over where your lashing land but there’s a clear limit to how much force you can comfortably put in those swings. The shape of the tail or falls will also have a lot to say here. Slimmer and longer ends will more often create a stingy sensation where broader and flatter falls on a flogger, for example, feel much more thuddy and relatively comfortable.

Materials

Materials - Things to Consider Before Buying a BDSM Whip
The material of your BDSM whip will also have a lot to do with the sensation it creates when you’re going to town on your partner with it. Leather is a staple in the world of BDSM toys for a reason! It can feel soft and comfortable but the right shape and size will be able to send a sharp pain to your skin. Silicone also varies like this, although sometimes silicone can feel a bit “grippy” and not as sleek. Although silicone BDSM whips are super easy to clean and maintain. Metal is definitely a material that is more suitable for advanced kinksters when it comes to intense impact play. A metal BDSM whip can pack a scary punch. Always exercise caution when using metal whip and floggers. But metal is also a great material for not-so-advanced kinksters to use for less intense play, since the metal is great for sensation play. In this way metal ticklers can be great choice for all levels of experience.

Style

Style - Things to Consider Before Buying a BDSM Whip
Even though BDSM whip is a term that can be used interchangeably to refer to sex whips, floggers, riding crops, or other impact toys, it is necessary to distinguish between the different styles of impact toys when you’re considering which one to purchase. Because of the basic differences between floggers and whips that I’ve expanded upon in the sections above, there’s a clear recommendation. Usually it will be safer for beginner to intermediate users to start ourt with floggers made of leather or flexible silicone. Generally, the styles of toys that generate more “thuddy” sensations are great for this level. Experienced and advanced kinksters are more suited for using larger and longer whips and riding crops, since the stingy sensations can be overwhelmingly sharp. Experimentation with these sensations requires a great deal of experience in navigating sensitive spaces of communication.

How to Use a BDSM Whip

Let’s go over a few different ways to use different kinds of BDSM whips depending on your experience level.

Safety First!

Safety First!

It’s very tempting to buy a new toy and want to use it straight away! We understand! However, before you get carried away there are some tips on BDSM for beginners that you need to follow.

  • Consent is key! Make sure that all involved are ready and willing to play.
  • Practice on an inanimate object first – a pillow or cushion.
  • Every flogger is different and you need to practice your aim and test the intensity of your new toy.
  • Agree on a safe words or safe gesture that will stop the activity immediately. These are an essential part of play. They’re for your safety and cannot be skipped over. You can have a word or action to stop play completely and one to slow things down.
  • Don’t hit too hard or too frequently.
  • Stick to safe areas such as the buttocks, back of the thighs if you are a beginner.
  • Never hit the spine, kidneys or any other vital organs.

Which body parts?

Which body parts?

  • For beginners, we suggest that you start with the soft and squishy buttocks.
  • Always avoid the tailbone, spine, kidneys, face and neck, regardless of experience.
  • Be gentle on breasts, soles of feet, calves and genitals.

Types of flogger

Types of flogger

  • To begin with, try a flogger with shorter tails.
  • Work up to floggers with longer tails, knotted tails, braids or beads.
  • Floggers come in a variety of materials. To start with choose something softer to begin with – suede or faux-fur.
  • With practice you can move onto leather, faux-leather, rubber or even chain.
  • Give yourself time to find out what each flogger can do.

Let's begin!

Let's begin!

  • Decide on the position of the flogg-ee. Over the knee, on all fours, standing, lying down restrained?
  • Warm up the part that you’re going to flog. If your hands are cold, rub them together, then give those buttocks a massage and a squeeze.
  • Gently run the flogger over your partner’s body, let them get used to the feel of it on their skin. Build up the anticipation.
  • Remember to start gently and build up the intensity.

Techniques

Techniques

There are some basic flogging techniques:

  • Back and forth – step back and gently sway the flogger backwards and forwards across the buttocks. Just using the bottom 1/4 of the falls if you are using longer falls.
  • If you’re too close then the falls can wrap around the body which isn’t that pleasant.
  • Circle or pinwheel – swing the flogger around in a downwards circle that catches the buttocks with the falls.
  • Figure 8 – swing the flogger in a figure 8 motion, catching the buttocks on the downwards stroke either side. This can also be reversed to catch the buttocks on the upward stroke.
  • Flick – grab the falls all in one hand, you can twist them too, then intentionally flick the bottom.
  • The back and forth and figure 8 are great warm up strokes, but the flick is more intense
  • When you’re more practiced, move onto the Florentine or the two-handed figure of 8.
  • The aim is to vary the sensation.
  • Always practice on a pillow before moving on to using a flogger on a person.

Using whips

Using whips

BDSM whips or sexual whips look incredible, but they should only be used by advanced BDSM practitioners.

  • BDSM whips can inflict intense pain and damage on a person so need to be used only by experts.
  • If you’re experienced and want to learn about BDSM whips take a look at flicker whips or dragon tails.
  • These sex whips are easier to control, easier to learn and are less likely to inflict serious pain or damage.
Of course, you’ll need to practice A LOT on pillows and other inanimate objects first. Flicker whips
  • More rigid, so easier to master and control
  • Intense and stingy pain, but less so than traditional sex whips.
Dragon Tail
  • Just a handle and a tail that finishes at a point.
  • Easier to control and handle than traditional sex whips.
  • Still stings hellishly for higher impact play.
  • Made from soft suede or soft leather.

How to Clean BDSM Whips

It is important to clean your sex whips and floggers after each use. As most of them are made from porous materials, they can harbour bacteria, so it is really important to get them cleaned up. If your flogger is 100% waterproof and made of silicone, then a good wash in hot soapy water, then air-dried, will be all that it needs. Other materials, such as PVC, nylon, faux leather can be wiped down with hot, soapy water or antibacterial toy wipes. Leather and suede need a different kind of care. If the leather becomes wet, then blot it with paper towels and let it dry naturally. If a cleaner is needed, then use one specifically made for leather. Leather will need to be conditioned occasionally to keep it supple, and after it has been cleaned. Again, use one specifically for leather. If you need to sterilize, or remove mildew from your leather flogger or BDSM whip, then mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water. Spray this mixture onto the leather in a fine mist or wet a soft cloth with it. Gently wipe the surfaces and allow it to dry naturally. Suede can be cleaned with a product made specifically for it.

FAQ

There are so many different types of floggers available. Think about the type of sensation that you would like. If you want something soft and 'thuddy', then go for a fabric, or suede flogger, with lots of wider falls. If you prefer a sting, then go for a flogger with thinner and fewer falls.

Yes. You need to be aware of your own comfort and be able to communicate when you'd like to slow down or stop. This is where safewords are essential - even if you are only lightly playing. Floggers can be used to tease and tickle and for you to feel different types of sensations on your body, they don't have to be painful.

First of all, practice your techniques on a pillow. Every flogger is different in weight, materials and length and number of tails. So get some practice in so you know how to be gentle and teasing and sharper. Then, start off gently and slowly build-up. Make sure your partner has a safe word so you know when to ease back or stop.

It varies from person to person. Aftercare is something that eases the transition from BDSM play to normal life. BDSM can be very intense and immersive and you will likely need some time to both come down from it. Aftercare can take the form of cuddling, talking, being wrapped up in a blanket, drinking water and snacks, watching a movie, sleeping together. You can go over what happened and talk about what was good, what you'd like to change. It's a time to bring your minds back to reality.

Lots of places! Look through our review and you'll find links to lots of different online shops that sell BDSM whips.

What is a Sexual BDSM whip?

A BDSM whip is tool most commonly used in impact play. It can refer to anything like a flogger, tickler, crop and actual sex whips. The term is used interchangeably, so it can get a little confusing. It's basically anything that can be used to spank, cane, flog or whip a person at different intensities in order to elicit different sensations. The sensations you feel will vary from tickling to teasing to experiencing pain like a 'thud' or a 'sting' that can be mild or intense. It all depends on what you are using and how you are using it.
