7 Best Floggers

   Isabelle Uren
I’m a big fan of floggers for the different sensations they can create from sensual to scary! Having been on the giving and receiving end of a fair few floggers, I know what makes a great one, so I’ve put that experience to use in this review! I’ve looked through all the floggers we’ve tested and found the best of each kind for this ultimate list of the best floggers!

I have to admit, it was a little tricky to to decide which flogger would take the top-spot in this review! I was torn between putting a more beginner-friendly option, but if I am truly picking the best flogger that we’ve reviewed here at Bedbible, this is it! Yes, it’s a little more expensive and a not the best flogger for beginners, but it is fantastic quality leather flogger that’s great for more advanced impact play. If I were to buy a BDSM flogger, this would be it. Lea tested it out for us and was also impressed by the quality, commenting “that the flogger is also quite heavy which gives a high-quality feel” and worth the price “for anyone who is into more serious BDSM and impact play or who wants a luxurious, heavy flogger.” However, as she was relatively new to using floggers, she did find that the size and weight “requires a little more skill to control,” and she “had to practice a few times before finding the right angle.” She also found that the weight of the flogger provided some “quite intense sensations,” — another reason I recommend this for more serious impact play! I like that this is made of real leather, as it’s a material that will last with the right care and it has “that real leather smell” that adds to the experience. Lea did find that the leather did lose some small bits during use though.

2 Best for Beginners

Bondage Boutique Black Rose Beginners Flogger

  • 6 inch handle

Black Rose Flogger
LengthTotal: 18.5 inches, Falls: 10 inches
MaterialsFaux PU Leather

The Bondage Boutique Black Rose Beginners Flogger stands out at the best for beginners for a couple of reasons (and no, it’s not just because of the name!). I remember using a flogger for the first time and being nervous to hit the recipient too hard, but with this light flogger, you are unlikely to reach that level. It’s also a very cheap option, so you don’t have to invest too much upfront before you know if you really enjoy flogging! It was our tester, Britnee, was new to impact play and was “pleasantly surprised to find that, while delivering a nice “sting,” the impact wasn’t intolerable.” She found it was the just the right size to be the perfect amount of intimidating! She was also happy that the flogger felt “extremely well made,” considering the low price point. I would say that the quality is great for lower intensity play, but might not withstand more intense use.

3 Budget-Friendly

DOMINIX Deluxe Leather Flogger

 DOMINIX Deluxe Leather Flogger

DOMINIX Deluxe Leather Flogger

  • 40 slim leather falls
  • 10 inch falls
  • 7 inch handle with wrist loop

  • Durable materials
  • Good for beginner-intermediate play
  • Intense sound
  • Nice weight

  • Not strong enough for more advanced play
  • Not thuddy enough
DOMINIX Deluxe Leather Flogger
LengthTotal: 17 inches, Falls: 10 inches
MaterialsLeather

I chose the DOMINIX Deluxe Leather Flogger as the best on the budget as it’s a great all-round flogger that will suit most tastes at a great price! It’s a couple of dollars more than the best for beginners option, but I still picked it because I think it’s a flogger that can see you from beginner to intermediate play, making it great value for money! Melissa reviewed it for us and “was delightfully surprised at the smooth texture and weighty handle” and thought it was well worth the price! She liked that the “tails were soft and uniform” and “don’t need to be broken in before use.”   The tails in this flogger are quite thin, which creates “a more stinging pain” and a “satisfying *whip* sound” on impact. If I were looking for a more thuddy impact, I’d go for a flogger with thicker tails. She was also relieved that although it did shed a small amount in the beginning, the real leather tails didn’t flake apart like other cheap floggers.

4 Most Advanced

Sportsheets Saffron Faux Leather Braided Flogger

 Saffron Faux Leather Braided Flogger

  • Cat-o-nine-tails design
  • 9 braided, faux leather tails with pointed tips
  • Beaded handle with wrist loop

  • Very stingy, intense impact

  • Some might want a little more weight
  • Bubble handle might be uncomfortable for some
  • Quite stiff and artificial-feeling
Saffron Faux Leather Braided Flogger
LengthTotal: 24 inches, Falls: 17 inches
MaterialsPU Faux Leather, Nylon

I chose the braided flogger as the most advanced flogger as the braided falls with pointed tips can deliver a very intense, very stingy sensation that requires a bit more experience to control. I think it will be a great choice for those looking for a sturdy BDSM flogger. Our tester, Theo, took on the challenge of testing out and he “enjoyed the extra heft of the braided tails and the bite the rose tips, both when wielding this and when on the receiving end.” He liked that the “thuddy impact was accented by a stingy bite” from the diamond shaped tips on the end. The flogger “swung nicely” and “ridged handle is easy to grip,” although he also commented that the extra weight can “take some extra work to swing.” Theo didn’t mind that the falls were made of faux leather but did question how durable it would be in the long run, especially after more intense use!

5 Best Faux Leather

Sportsheets Saffron Flogger

 Sportsheets Saffron Flogger

Sportsheets Saffron Flogger

  • 30 Thick, flat faux leather falls
  • Falls measure 17 inches
  • 6 inch metal handle with wrist loop

  • Great for vegans
  • Unique dual color design
  • Delivers a good thwack
  • Metal handle feels great

  • Metal handle doesn't have great grip
  • Falls feel a little stiff
Sportsheets Saffron Flogger
LengthTotal: 23 inches, Falls: 17 inches
MaterialsPolyurethane, nickel free metal, nylon

I actually tested out the Sportsheets Saffron Flogger quite early on in my impact play journey and thought it made a great beginner-intermediate level flogger. It feels great in the hand and the falls are relatively thick and heavy. Compared to a leather or suede flogger, they do feel a little stiffer, though. These qualities give it a slightly thuddier sensation, which I enjoyed. I also think it feels very well-made and durable to other beginner floggers, with the metal handle giving it a nice solid feeling. The only downside to the metal handle is that it doesn’t have a lot of grip, so I definitely recommend using the wrist loop attached to avoid it getting away from you! I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the red and black design to begin with but it’s definitely grown on me, and I like that it matches my Sportsheets Saffron Spreader Bar as well! I will say, that after a while, I did find myself craving a little more weight for an even thuddier, more intense impact but I would highly recommend it for an introduction to flogging!

6 Best Suede Flogger

Bondage Boutique Advanced Extra Long Suede Flogger

 Bondage Boutique Suede Flogger

Bondage Boutique Suede Flogger

  • 13.5 inch long suede tails
  • 6 inch studded handle
  • Wrist loop for security

  • Soft, sensual suede falls
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Light and easy to use

  • Isn't advanced or extra long
  • Black dye rubs off from handle
  • Sheds a little
Bondage Boutique Suede Flogger
LengthTotal: 19.5 inches, Falls: 13.5 inches
MaterialsSuede

I also reviewed this suede flogger and you might notice that I gave it a pretty low score. However, this wasn’t because it’s a bad flogger per se, it’s because it just didn’t live up to Lovehoney’s claim that it’s an “Advanced Extra Long Flogger” with an “added weight also increases the intensity.” With a total length of 19.5 inches, it’s the same length, if not a little shorter than, most floggers in this review. It’s also very lightweight compared to other floggers I’ve tried. Misleading description aside, I actually think this flogger feels great in use! I enjoyed the more sensual feeling of the suede against my skin, whether it was used for a light, thuddy thwack or a teasing tickle. I think it’s great when I’m in the mood for some power/impact play but don’t want a lot of pain or intense sensations. I would warn against using it while wearing light clothing though as it did leave some black marks on my hands after the first few uses.

7 Best Dildo Flogger

Icicles No 38 Glass Dildo with Leather Flogger

 Icicles No 38

Icicles No 38

  • 5-inch pyrex glass dildo/handle
  • Wavy textural details on dildo
  • 30 18-inch suede tails

  • Dildo can be heated or cooled for temperature play
  • Great for power play/punishment
  • Unique style

  • Tricky to clean
  • Handle can get slippery when used with lube
  • No storage bag
Icicles No 38
LengthTotal: 26.5 inches, Falls: 18 inches
Insertable length6.75 inches
Diameter1.5 inches
MaterialsLeather, Borosilicate Glass
WaterproofGlass: Yes, Falls: No

This dildo flogger is a really great power play tool that I can see being great for doling out punishments to any naughty subs! The glass dildo looks intimidating while still being a size that most can enjoy comfortably. Dani absolutely loved it and went as far as to say it “is by far one of the nicest pieces in [his] collection” and “the best glass dildo I have ever used.” He really enjoyed that “the falls are nice and smooth and give a wonderfully even hit.” He was also a big fan of how the glass dildo felt when inserted, commenting that the initial ball at the tip “is a pretty intense stretch, but a very pleasing one at that” and that it performed well for temperature play. His only complaint was that cleaning the glass dildo after internal use was a bit tricky as the suede falls should be kept dry.

Best Flogger Materials

You’ll have a fairly wide variety of materials to choose from when selecting a new flogger. Here are your options!
  • Leather – Leather floggers can vary in stiffness, with some producing a sharp stinging sensation upon impact.
  • Faux Leather – Perfect for vegans who like the look but hate the product, faux leather tends to provide more “bite” than a bruise.
  • Silicone – Sterilizable and flexible, silicone is capable of inflicting sharp stinging pains and bruising.
  • Suede – Flexible and soft, this material tends to provide more “sting” than “thud”.
  • Elk Hide – Offering both a sting and a thud, this material is relatively soft, though heavier overall than suede.
  • Metal – Hard, stingy, and capable of producing serious injury, this material is best left to more experienced users when utilized in a BDSM scenario. Can also be used for temperature play.
  • Rope – Generally speaking, rope will feel very sharp if you’re on the receiving end, although you can also achieve a “thuddy” sensation if using a thick enough rope.

Choosing the Best Flogger for You

Floggers offer a variety of sensations, determined by the material they are made from, the number of falls, whether they are weighted or not, their handle design, and how thin the falls are. Which particular flogger works best for you and your play partner depends on a lot of factors: how much “thud” or “sting” sensation you want, how much weight you want behind the blows, whether you have multiple partners, and what each playmate’s pain tolerance is. To help figure out what will most appeal to you and your play partners, it’s best to visit a shop or venue in person to get a literal feel for the merchandise. However, that isn’t always possible, so here are some guidelines for picking out a flogger:
  • The more falls a flogger has, the more spread out the force of the blow will be. Generally that means more “thud” and less “sting”, though toys like a filament rubber flogger will still have a lot of bite.
  • The stiffer and stretchier the material the flogger is made from, and the narrower and fewer its falls, the more “sting” it will provide.
  • Suede, deerskin and elkskin falls can provide a good deal of “thud” but rarely sting.
  • Rope falls sting more if the ropes are narrower, stiffer or knotted on the ends.
  • Oiled leather, buffalo hide and other stiff leather falls will sting more and possibly leave welts.
  • Rubber falls will sting more than thud, especially filament rubber or stiff, narrow rubber falls.
  • Weighted falls will provide more intensity but are also harder to swing and aim.
  • Rubber floggers are the easiest to clean if you have multiple partners.
Always consider the preferences, needs and endurance of the person(s) the flogger will be used on when picking one out. A big, muscular sub who loves heavy thud will like a weighted, fifty-fall flogger much more than a small, thin sub who prefers lighter impacts or sting.

How to use a flogger

If you’re new to using a flogger, it’s going to take a little time to get used to the sensations, whether you’re engaging in sensory play or pain-play. Here’s how we recommend using a flogger toy:

Go Slow

Go Slow

When beginning any type of play with a flogger, take it slow and let your body adjust to the sensations. Don’t go straight into direct lashing or spanking – the joy of sensation play is all about slowly building arousal and awakening the senses. It’s important to play safe – communicate regularly with your partner.

Impact Play

Impact Play

Using a flogger isn’t always going to be the most comfortable experience – in fact, many BDSM enthusiasts love floggers because they enjoy the thrills of pain-play. If you think you’re into that kind of thing, test out your flogger with your partner and experiment with light, gentle, and more intense use.

Punishment Play

Punishment Play

Lots of BDSM enthusiasts love using floggers when engaging in power-play and “punishing” their sub. If you’re engaged in a BDSM relationship, some punishment play can be exhilarating when you add a fetish flogger into the mix!

Sensation Play

Sensation Play

Using a flogger is ideal for all types of sensation play, especially as you can alternate between light tickling and thudding spanks! Explore the full sensory spectrum with a versatile flogger – pair your play with a blindfold to enhance your sensations.

Choose the right suede flogger for you!

Choose the right suede flogger for you!

As I’m sure you can see from my post, there are plenty of suede floggers out there! So finding the right one for you and your partner is super important! You want one that you will both have fun with, so taking your time to discover what you both want and need is an essential part of the suede flogger finding!

Start things off gently!

Start things off gently!

So you’ve made your choice? Okay, cool! Once you’ve found the flogger for you, it’s always a good idea to start out soft. Gentle tickles with the tails, up and down the body, really does tease those nerve endings and get things tantalizingly steamy. Despite what you might think, suede floggers really can be amazing gentle tickling tools!

Start to get a little more heavy handed!

Start to get a little more heavy handed!

So you’ve had some soft play, it’s time to get harder! Use that flogger to swipe across the body or buttocks, gentle at first but gradually getting harder and harder. It’s essential to listen to what your partner wants and what they are happy with – the idea is to have some fun, not hurt them! Once you both get into your strides, you’ll find that using a suede flogger really is a sexy and naughty experience!

How to clean a flogger

Cleaning a flogger will all depend on what material your flogger is made of. If your toy is made with real leather, you should invest in a leather cleaner to keep your toy free of bacteria and in tip-top condition. If your flogger is made with steel or metal, you should be able to clean it thoroughly with warm soapy water, or by sanitizing it in boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Other flogger materials, such as elk hide or PU leather should be treated by following the instructions on the product packaging or in the instruction manual. You can refer to our sex toy cleaning guide below for more information:

FAQ

You can definitely make your own DIY flogger if you've not got the means currently to invest in a shop-made toy. However, we always recommend that you buy your toys from official and reputable sex toy retailers, and we take zero responsibility for the consequences of using a DIY sex toy.

Floggers only hurt if you want them to! You can buy floggers that are designed more for tickling and sensation play rather than spanking, or you can buy a tickler if you prefer something lighter.

Well, that all depends on how you use it! It certainly can do! But it can also feel pleasurable and gentle. It's all about setting out what you and your partner want and respecting those boundaries. Once you know where you both stand and how much pain you're willing to take, then you are bound to have endless amounts of fun!

For sensation play, you can use a gentle flogger on most parts of the body. When it comes to lashing and spanking, floggers are typically used on the back and buttocks, although some BDSM enthusiasts use them on the more delicate parts of the body. We would advise you to avoid delicate parts of the body when using a flogger if you're inexperienced and always start gently when experimenting with lashing.

Anyone! There's no one type of person that is exclusively allowed to use suede floggers. Whether you're male, female, straight, gay, or anything in between, you can ALL enjoy using a suede flogger (or having one used on you!)

You can buy a flogger at most sex shops both online and in person. We always recommend buying sex toys from reputable sex toy retailers rather than online warehouses such Amazon, so that you can be guaranteed the authenticity and safety of the product.

That is probably because of the heat and general usage of them. As the tails warm up over time, they start to stretch or shrink a little. So while they may start out at the exact same length, they will probably change. But don't worry - this is completely normal.

Some floggers are made with vegan-friendly PU leather, but always make sure to check the product details before purchasing: some floggers will use faux leather but not be fully 100% vegan.

Right here, by following the links in this post! Bedbible only with the very best sex toy-selling stores, so you can be sure that when you follow a link, you’re going to be directed somewhere well-loved and highly respected! You're welcome!

Shop around! Toy shopping is a great activity to do with your partner. Doing so in person in a local shop will give you a chance to ask questions, and maybe even test the sensations conveyed by each type of flogger to figure out what turns you on the most.

Because floggers distribute impact over a wider area, and can be made of softer materials, they are a good starter toy for those who are still figuring out how hard they should (or want to be) hit, and where. Newcomers can use suede, cloth or soft leather floggers to explore pain play much more safely than if they start out with, say, a rubber whip or a cane.

Thud and sting refer to the two basic sensations in impact play. Thud is a deeper, broader impact, which causes less surface pain but can also involve deep muscles and nerves. Sting on the other hand is largely surface pain, providing a much sharper sensation. Thuddy toys, like deerskin floggers, are less likely to leave marks, but may bruise if swung hard enough. Stingy toys, like oiled leather floggers, are more likely to leave marks or even break skin.

What is a flogger?

A flogger is a type of BDSM impact toy that is among the most commonly used, especially by beginners. A Flogger consists of two parts: A handle Falls – between three and a hundred “falls” What are “falls”? Falls are hanging strands of whatever material the flogger is made from. Floggers are most commonly made of soft suede, deerskin, or similar material, with between twenty and forty falls in relatively wide strips. There is a lot of variation on this, however, providing a wide variety of sensations and intensities. Floggers differ from similar-looking items like cats or multi-tailed whips in that they largely convey a “thud” sensation; their falls are generally not braided, and tend to be wider. A flogger is one of the most common impact toys used in BDSM, and is the one most likely to be recommended for beginners. It is relatively safe and easy to use, and doesn’t require a lot of practice to master compared to other impact toys. Floggers come in a variety of materials, but always consist of a handle tipped with a varying number of falls. The number of falls contributes to the weight of the blows and how “thuddy” the impacts are. The material used to make a flogger determines how soft or stiff the falls are, which determines whether the impact will have more of a sting to it. A boiled leather or rubber flogger can impart a lot of sting. Aftercare depends on the intensity of the session and what kind of floggers were used. Welts and bruises are the commonest injuries. Once the sub is tended to, the flogger may need care too, ranging from simple disinfecting with a 10% bleach solution, to a soft-bristle brush and saddle soap for suede or leather toys.
