The 3 Best Pinwheels for BDSM

   Kevin Foley
A BDSM pinwheel, or a wartenberg wheel, is a device used to roll over skin and tantalize the nerve endings; when you’ve been sufficiently teased, you’ll feel every touch a lot stronger than before. Finding the best one, required me to enlist the help of a handful of testers ready to explore and test with me – and we found some fantastic options among the tested pinwheels. Read on for our ranking of the 3 best BDSM pinwheels we’ve reviewed!

As an expert I’ve chosen the Bondage Boutique wartenberg wheel as the test winner, first and foremost because our tester, Katie, had an amazing experience using it, saying that it “exceeded all of my expectations”. She even said she would “be picking this up again and again”, in large parts because the “pain never got too extreme”. One of the things I really like about a smaller BDSM toy like this, is that they have weight too it, as Katie also pointed out: “I was pleasantly surprised by how heavy it was”. I thought it was really well made and the design proved to “fit comfortably in my hand”, Katie said. She also added that she “at no time felt like I was in danger of bleeding”, which is because of the design of the tips/spikes being slightly rounded.

The Fifty Shades Darker Wartenberg Pinwheel is remarkably similar to the test winner, as it only really sets itself apart on two areas. First, it uses a slightly different metal blend and coating, giving it a darker-ish color. Brett, who tested it with his partner for us, said that the “polished metal gave it a nice medical feel.”. Second, the spikes are slightly sharper, which also might be why Brett and his partner said “it felt sharp” and “were much more abrupt than we expected”. They did add that despite the sharpness it wasn’t “so much that we were afraid of puncturing skin”. Despite not being immediate fans of using pain during foreplay they liked the overall quality, the fact that the “wheel rolled nicely” and that it felt “pretty premium compared to other sex toys”. The only thing that both I, and Brett noted was that it could use a “plastic washer to stop it from squeaking and wobbling”. Although, I will say, I’ve heard from some that the noise in itself can be a part of what builds up anticipation and tension. To be completely honest, the only real reason this didn’t make the test winning position is because it’s slightly more expensive. And, of course, the test winner was rated higher (despite the products being very similar).

The Master Series Lil Devil Mini Pinwheel is a great beginner choise for multiple reasons, but most of all because it’s inexpensive and one of the softer-spikes on any wartenberg pinwheel out there. Looking at all the pinwheels tested from Bedbible testers I haven’t found a more safe pinwheel. While it was a negative for Britnee and her partner that the “it’s too lightweight to find a good angle for harder pressure” it does make it great for beginners who want to avoid applying to much pressure anyways. And, Britnee did also have her hesitations about the quality of the product and if they were going to use it much more. But, what getting it did do for them was make her decide that “further exploration into sensory play should be in my future”. They also noted that it were “inexpensive enough to not worry about it if it’s never used again”. Which all in all is basically what makes for a perfect beginner toy – especially when exploring a completely new type of sexual play. Lastly, they did also say that they found it too small, saying it looked like “it should be held by a small, barbarian action figure”. I honestly laughed, but heck, the small size is what gives it the beginner-worthy qualities at the end of the day.

Things to consider

The most important things to consider when buying a pinwheen is
  1. the Material it’s made of,
  2. the no. of spike-rows, and
  3. the type of shape/usage.

1. Materials:

Metal (stainless steel, chrome-plated)
  • easy to clean and disinfect
  • durable
  • aesthetically pleasing
  • great for medical fetish toys
Plastic (disposable)
  • great for experimenting
  • not as durable
  • one-use only

2. Rows of spikes:

Classic wheel
  • a single wheel with spikes
Disposable wheel
  • made from plastic
  • should be disposed after one use
Seven wheeled
  • seven wheels with spikes
Medeival spinner
  • commonly used for pain play
  • designed to support deep pressure
Double-sided spinner
  • very sharp
  • extra care should be taken when using

3. Shape

Handheld
  • attached to a handle
  • easy to run over the body
Finger
  • attaches to finger
  • easy to use during sensory play

How to a Pinwheel BDSM Toy

They seem simple to use, but is there a “right” way and a “wrong” way to use a pinwheel BDSM toy? Let’s find out!

Using a Pinwheel

Using a Pinwheel

Pinwheel toys are extremely easy to use: you simply run the pinwheel over your partner’s skin, applying more or less pressure to achieve the desired effect! While this is simple in practice, getting your technique just right will take a bit of practice, although you’ll certainly have fun learning more about your partner’s most sensitive parts in the meantime. While pinwheel toys can be used alone, many people add blindfolds or other props into the mix.

How to Clean a Pinwheel BDSM Toy

Both plastic and metal pinwheel toys can be cleaned using antibacterial soap and warm water (you can also use toy cleaner). After you’ve washed and scrubbed your toy off using a washcloth, make sure to pat your toy dry with a towel and leave it out to air dry before storage. Failing to allow your pinwheel to completely dry could result in unwanted bacteria growth! Metal pinwheel BDSM toys can also be sterilized. The process is very simple: boil some water, drop your pinwheel into the boiling water, leave it there for at least three minutes, and then remove the pinwheel and follow the recommended drying steps above.

FAQ

BDSM is a sexual activity and sometimes lifestyle; it stands for Bondage and Discipline, Dominance, Submission and Masochism. It involves pain, pleasure, dominance, submission, bondage, and lots more consensual practices.

We would recommend starting with a metal pinwheel that has blunted spikes, but the choice is up to you: there isn’t any “right” way or “wrong” choice! Metal gives the overall 'luxury' and BDSM aesthetic, whilst plastic can appear a little cheaper looking depending on the brand and price- of course, it's all about what you prefer!

No. Beyond the possibility of drawing blood (which means you must clean and sanitize your toy afterward), there aren’t any risks associated with using pinwheel BDSM toys. Be mindful of the pressure that you put on the toy, especially if you or the person receiving the it does not want to feel any sort of pain.

The neck, chest, arms, legs, and inner thigh are all great places to start, but each individual will have their own 'sensitive spots'!

No, you can use a pinwheel on most body parts (though obviously not the eyes). However, if you’re using a pinwheel on the genitalia, take things easy, taking care not to damage this sensitive skin.

This happens sometimes: not to worry! The only issue is if your partner doesn’t want you to press down that hard. Always communicate about what you both want, and what feels good and doesn't. Consent is everything! If they’re fine with it, all is good! However, you should bear in mind that drawing blood increases your risk of sharing bloodborne diseases, so ensure that your pinwheel is sterilized if blood is drawn and you're using the toy with multiple partners. Also, remember to clean any broken skin to help further protect yourself from pathogens.

Originally starting out as a medical tool used to assess neurological sensory function, a wartenberg wheel is used to stimulate the skin and the nerves during sexual scenarios. By rolling the toy along the skin, the nerve endings become more responsive.

Anyone with the desire to increase sensitivity can use a pinwheel! If your skin is very delicate or thin, be extra cautious with the amount of pressure that is put on the pinwheel, as it could easily cause tearing or bruising.

What is a Pinwheel BDSM Toy?

A pinwheel BDSM toy (also known as a Wartenberg Wheel) is a toy designed to stimulate the nerve endings of the skin by poking it with individual spikes. These toys are a favorite amongst the medical fetish, as they originally started out as medical devices used to assess sensory function. Using a BDSM pinwheel is completely safe, as long as you and your partner(s) have communicated preferences beforehand; you should never put heavy pressure on the skin when using a pinwheel (unless your partner has enthusiastically expressed desire for this and consented), as this could cause bruising and bleeding. If you or your partner bleed due to the pressure, be sure to clean the pinwheel thoroughly and your skin. Be aware that bleeding can cause transmission of bloodborne pathogens. Some favorite places to use a pinwheel are, the inner thighs, neck, chest, arms, and legs- if using on the genitalia, you shouldn't put pressure on the pinwheel as the skin around this area is very delicate. For beginners, we recommend a blunted metal pinwheel for experimentation, or of course, you can use a plastic pinwheel- it's all about preference!
