7 Best BDSM Restraints for Bedroom Bondage

   Isabelle Uren
I’ve used my knowledge and experience as a long time BDSM’er and sex toy expert, together with the help of the Bedbible tester team, to select the best restraints possible for this review! I’ve put together a list of 7 different types of BDSM restraints that met all of my criteria. My list includes different types such as handcuffs, sex bed straps, a spreader bar, and a couple of kits!
1 Best Bed Straps

This has to be the best BDSM restraint I have tried to date! No it’s not the most secure or heavy duty restraint but my goodness it’s SO much fun! The thing I love about these sex bed straps is that once I installed them, which was actually very easy to do, they have just stayed under my bed, ready and waiting for any impromptu bondage sessions that may arise! My absolutely favorite thing about this set is when my partner tightens the straps — the sound of the straps, combined with my wrists and legs getting pulled tight to the bed sends excitement coursing through my body! I will say, they aren’t the most secure restraints and the straps can move around a little during use, so if you are looking for more heavy-duty, high security bondage, I would go for restraints with buckles that secure directly to the bed. Otherwise, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy these again!

I was the lucky tester of the Sportsheets Saffron Spreader Bar and it was my first time trying a spreader bar. I really liked that it had the option for both wrist and ankle restraint at the same time, as I was interested in exploring full body restraint, but I will also say it was quite an intense experience! Of all the restraints I’ve tried, I think this was one of the most intense, which also came with some fantastically subby-feelings! That being said, I like that you can also use it just on the ankles or wrists for a less intense restraint, as the cuffs are detachable. This also has the added benefit of making it really easy to switch positions during use without having to undo and refasten the buckles on the restraints. Although I found the vegan leather a little stiff, the cuffs are actually very comfortable to wear during use. I was also really surprised by how sturdy it is. I don’t have any worries using it for more rough play. The red and black color combo isn’t my favorite, but once I was locked in, it made very little difference! I actually now have a few BDSM products from the Saffron range, and I’ve been impressed with the quality. I think it makes for some great intermediate level bondage gear.

I chose to include these door restraints are another really fun way to explore bondage outside the bed, and having your partner restrained while standing offers new and exciting ways to tease them! The Door Jam restraints ticked loads of our tester Cassie’s boxes — they are “super affordable, very easy to use, ideal for bringing with you on the go, machine washable, and pretty much compatible with any kind of door you would have at home.” She found these “by far one of the easiest ways to explore standing bondage play at every angle” without having to install hooks or more permanent solutions. Overall, she was pleased with the quality and although they are lightweight and maybe not the best for heavy-duty bondage, she found “they actually are quite durable.” The cuffs themselves are quite basic and “shed a tiny bit” but they are “super soft on the skin.” The main downside that Cassie discovered when testing them was the lack of adjustability in the strap-length. I can see this being an issue for anyone significantly shorter than average or using them with very high door frames.

4 Best Bondage Tape

I thought this bondage tape deserved a spot in the review, as it’s just so versatile and easy to use! While I don’t think it’s the best option for all kinds of bondage, I think it’s a really great way to tie someone up quickly and a fantastic ‘on-the-go’ option that I would chuck into my bag for some holiday fun! Our tester, Britnee, loved how easy it was to use for wrist restraint but did find that “with vigorous movement/struggle, the tape became lax” and she was able to escape. She also found some more creative uses for it and found that it made a “a nice wrap around the breasts or as a choker around the neck.” It was also impressive that “When used as a blindfold it doesn’t stick to the hair or pull out eyelashes/eyebrows” The other drawback of using bondage tape, aside from it not being the most secure, is that it “will stick to itself and tends to bunch up or roll” so it can be a little fiddly.

5 Best Handcuffs

I couldn’t do a review of restraints without a good pair of handcuffs! They truly are a staple in any BDSM toolkit. I personally don’t think you need to spend a whole lot on super fancy hand cuffs, it’s most often not worth it I’ve found. I actually think comfort and ease of use are much more important, which is why I chose the Bondage Boutique Soft Handcuffs. Edie reviewed them for us and actually preferred these soft cuffs over others she’d tried because “they are comfortable, breathable, and don’t leave any bruises or marks.” She also found that although the velcro was easy and non-intimidating, it was “surprisingly secure […]  Even pulling, wiggling and struggling while wearing these cuffs, they hold together so well” so although they are beginner-friendly, they are still very effective! She also pointed out that the swivel clips are a nice addition as they allow for a little bit of movement. I also like that they can be attached to each other or other restraint points. While I wouldn’t say these are the most luxurious handcuffs out there, I would be more than happy to add them to my collection!

6 Best Collar

Sportsheets Sincerely Bow Tie Collar and Leash

 Bow Tie Collar and Leash

Bow Tie Collar and Leash

  • Vegan leather adjustable collar
  • Vegan leather and chain lead
  • Swivel attachment point

  • Collar is comfortable to wear
  • Black bow tie design is gender neutral
  • Good amount of adjustability
  • Swivel attachment for lead

  • A lot of cable ties in packaging
  • Collar is quite chunky
  • Chain style leash is a bit clunky

I wasn’t sure about this BDSM collar at first and thought it was going to look and feel a bit too chunky on me, but once it was on, I actually really liked it! I originally got it for some kitty role play but it’s actually a great collar for all kinds of power play! I really love that the design in totally gender neutral and will look good on anyone and go with pretty much any style. The bow tie is a cute little extra but I was happy that it wasn’t too obvious or over the top. The vegan leather feels nice and soft against my skin and I found it comfortable to wear. I really like the look of the chain leash but it’s quite long and can clank around a bit, so it can be nicer to unclip it when you aren’t using it. It’s also really practical having D-rings on either side of the collar and swivelling mechanism on the clips. As someone who doesn’t use a collar often, this was the perfect price and quality for my needs. I think it’s a really fun little power play tool, as it instantly put me into my place as a sub!

7 Best Bondage Rope

Bondage Boutique Soft Bondage Rope

 Bondage Boutique Rope

Bondage Boutique Rope

  • 10 meters
  • Approx 0.5 inches thick
  • Woven cotton

  • Knots hold well
  • Feels comfortable in use
  • Can be used for different restraint projects

  • Doesn't come with storage bag
  • Ends can fray
Bondage Boutique Rope
Length10 metres inches
MaterialsCotton
TextureVery soft

I think bondage rope is a great way to move from beginner’s bondage into more intermediate bondage, with a bit more freedom and creativity. I chose the Bondage Boutique Soft Bondage Rope, as it’s a great quality rope at a great price that will satisfy most needs! Peter tried it out for us and was very happy with its performance and said it “it is perfect for what it’s designed for” and the woven cotton style has “a good look to it and a very nice soft feel.” Most importantly, “the rope held well and the knots stayed in place.” I love knowing that once I’ve got the rope in place it will stay put and won’t need to be readjusted! I also think that 10 meters is a good amount of rope for exploring a fair few bondage projects, and I really like that you can use it to restrain arms/legs to each other or to a restraint point, giving a lot more freedom than a single purpose restraint. Our tester did find that “the rope tightens up” during use, so I would be careful not to tie your ties too tightly and always leave a little room between the rope and your partner’s skin.

Popular Types of BDSM Restraints

  • Hand and Ankle CuffsHandcuffs for sex are available in a couple of different designs, but they all accomplish the same thing, restraining your sub from moving their hands or ankles!
  • Sexual Bed Restraints – These restraints are used to tie your sub to the bed, perfect for any full-body domination situation!
  • Door Restraints – The designs of these restraints vary. Most simply restrict your sub from moving their arms by holding their arms above their head using wrist restraints attached to the door frame, but some models may also restrict their ankles using the door frame as well.
  • Hogtie – Hogtie restraints restrain the sub’s arms and legs behind them, preventing any form of effective movement and giving you easy access to their clitoris/penis.
  • Spreader Bars – These bars feature restraints on each end of the bar. Once strapped in, your sub will be forced to keep their legs and/or arms spread wide!
  • Bondage Rope – Also known as shibari rope, this purpose-made rope is designed to safely restrain your sub using knots/designs of your choice. Rope is an excellent option for doms who want to get a bit more creative when restraining their partner.

How to use BDSM restraints

Bdsm restraints can seem a bit daunting at first but they really don’t have to be as there are so many different options. We have jotted down a few ideas to help you get started and hopefully the whole world of BDSM restraints doesn’t seem to intimidating!

Choose your restraints

Choose your restraints

The first step in trying out bondage restraints is choosing the right ones. Start off with super gentle and comfortable restraints that you know you can escape and this will help give you an idea of what you enjoy. This goes for all bdsm tools and toys, for example, if you are intrigued by nipple clamps and want to try them, it’s a good idea to see what’s out there and then start off with the most beginner friendly options.

Talk to your partner

Talk to your partner

Before you start using bondage restraints make sure that you discuss with your partner what you are comfortable with and what you’re not. It’s important to do this before you begin. This is especially important if you are going to be using something like ball gags, where the wearer won’t be able to talk to you during sex.

Safety first

Safety first

Make sure that you agree on a safe word beforehand, just in case things get a bit too intense and you’re no longer comfortable. You should always make sure that you have a quick and safe escape from your restraints in case of emergency. For example, if you’re using rope ties it’s a good idea to have a pair of scissors close by for a quick release if necessary.

Do your research

Do your research

With any new BDSM restraint, you should read the instructions before you use them to make sure that you know how to use them comfortably and safely. The more research that you’ve done about BDSM then the more comfortable you are going to be when you get starting trying different things. Even when you are a BDSM pro there will still always be more than you can learn, research will allow keeping sex fresh and exciting from trying out different sex positions to new toys.

How to clean your BDSM restraints

It's super important to make sure that clean your toys after every use to stop harmful bacteria from building up, which I think we can all agree nobody wants! All materials require cleaning in different ways so it's best to check with the manufacturer's instructions as to how to clean your bondage restraints, but we've also put together a handy little guide to help you get started.

For the most part almost all materials can be used for the straps themselves. Mostly you will find that most restraints use nylon or some type of hemp rope. However, when looking for the material of the cuffs itself, look for something breathable and preferably soft. Leather is always a good option here, but it can be expensive.

What are BDSM restraints?

BDSM restraints are restrictive accessories that allow you to explore different balances of power during sex. Bondage restraints can be used on different or all parts of the body: the most common BDSM restraints are those used on the wrists (such as handcuffs!). There are all kinds of things you can use as BDSM restraints such as ropes, handcuffs, or satin ties. The type of bondage restraints you choose will depend on the activities you plan on partaking in, as some endeavors may require stronger restraints than others.
